On August 31, 2004, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Susan Perkins and a friend were tinting windows in a salon on Maitland Avenue. A masked black male entered the salon. He was armed with an unknown type of rifle. The suspect ordered Susan and the other female victim into Susan’s red Ford Focus and made them drive to the Washington Mutual Bank at 500 E. Altamonte Drive. After making the victim withdraw money from her account via the drive-through ATM, the suspect ordered the victim out of the vehicle and into the trunk.

While leaving the bank, the victims were able to utilize the emergency release handle inside the trunk. The victims leaped from the trunk, but Susan struck her head on the pavement in her brave attempt to escape. She suffered fatal injuries.

In this case, the suspect is described as a black male of medium build. He wore a mask and long-sleeve military-style jacket and was said to have possibly smelled of motor oil.

It has been 22 years since this incident occurred, and we are asking if anyone has any information regarding this case to please contact the Altamonte Springs Police Department and help Susan’s family find some closure. Armed Bank Robber Indicted in Orlando

Case Number: 202610000384

Release Date: August 27, 2026

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL — The Altamonte Springs Police Department, in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), announces that Kelean Lerod Cobb, 38, has been charged by federal indictment with bank robbery, brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a violent crime, and possessing a firearm as a prohibited person. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on February 27, 2026, at Chase Bank, located at 971 N. State Road 434 in Altamonte Springs.

During the robbery, Cobb jumped over the teller counter and brandished a pistol at one of the bank tellers before pointing the firearm at another teller and directing her to open her drawer. Cobb then took cash from the teller drawer and fled the bank.

Cobb, a convicted felon prohibited from possessing fi****ms, now faces significant federal penalties as a result of this investigation. If convicted on all counts, he faces a minimum of seven years and up to life in federal prison.

This case highlights the strong partnership between the Altamonte Springs Police Department and our federal law enforcement partners. By combining our resources and expertise, we remain committed to pursuing justice for victims and holding violent offenders accountable.

E-bikes are a fun and convenient way to travel, but riders must follow the rules of the road. 🚲

✅ Obey traffic signs and signals
✅ Ride in the same direction as traffic
✅ Use bike lanes when available
✅ Use lights and reflectors when riding at night
✅ Yield to pedestrians and use caution on sidewalks and shared paths
✅ Wear a properly fitted helmet—Florida law requires one for riders under 16, but everyone is encouraged to wear one
✅ Never ride distracted or under the influence

Under Florida law, an e-bike must have fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. High-powered electric motorcycles and dirt bikes are not considered e-bikes and may require a driver license, registration and other safety equipment.

Operation Midnight Heat Results in 37 Arrests

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL — The Altamonte Springs Police Department, in collaboration with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office, FDLE and other local, state and federal law enforcement partners, conducted a two-day prostitution enforcement operation focused on combating prostitution-related offenses, apprehending wanted individuals, and identifying potential human trafficking victims.

The coordinated operation resulted in 37 arrests for charges including: Prostitution-Related Offenses, Traveling to Meet After Using a Computer to Lure a Child, Possession of Co***ne, Possession of Fentanyl, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Resisting an Officer Without Violence.

The operation reflects the commitment of the Altamonte Springs Police Department and its law enforcement partners to identifying and addressing criminal activity that threatens the safety and well-being of the community.

Homicide Investigation on Conrad Court

Release Date: August 23, 2026

On August 23, 2026, at approximately 3:15 p.m., officers with the Altamonte Springs Police Department responded to a residence on Conrad Court, where they located an unresponsive adult woman suffering from a gunshot wound.

The Seminole County Fire Department also responded and provided emergency medical aid, however, the woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During the investigation, John Schmalz-Riedt, 65, was identified as a person of interest.

As part of the ongoing investigation, the Altamonte Springs Police Department worked with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, which located Schmalz-Riedt near Howland Boulevard and State Road 415 in Volusia County. Following a standoff during which he barricaded himself in his truck with a gun, Schmalz-Riedt was taken into custody. Through the course of the investigation, detectives developed probable cause to establish Schmalz-Riedt’s involvement in the woman’s death.

Schmalz-Riedt is being charged with Second-Degree Murder with a Firearm and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. He was transported to the Volusia County Jail for processing and is being held without bond.
