Amelia Island Mosquito Control District

Amelia Island Mosquito Control District We are responsible for the control and abatement of mosquitoes for Amelia Island.

The District uses an integrated approach to mosquito control which involves four strategies:

-Water management (ditching, diking, elimination of standing water)

-Larvaciding (targeting the mosquito larva)

-Adulticiding (targeting the adult mosquito)

-Public education and positive relations through good customer service
and transparency

Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week 🦟

Today’s highlight is on our new addition to our public outreach program. We recently acquired honey bees in efforts to improve our understanding of them.

Not only will this help us have a better understanding of how mosquito control can coexist with backyard beekeeping but it shows that we have an appreciation and dedication to other beekeepers within our district.

Here we can see our Entomologist, Jared, leading the team in our routine hive inspections. It’s cool to see how each hive differs from the next. During our hive inspections we go through a check list and document all our data as we navigate throughout the year.

Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week 🦟

Today’s insight is on our surveillance program. This is part of the job the public almost never sees but is very important.

In our lab, we identify and count all the mosquitoes we gather in our traps which covers about 28 different species.

In our lab we test for viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes which can influence decisions made within our operations program.

Not only do we test for viruses but we monitor pesticide resistance within our mosquito populations to ensure our pesticides are still effective. This is known as the CDC bottle bioassay and is used by mosquito control districts around the world. 🔬🧪🧬

Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week 🦟

Part of our larviciding program is our monthly catch basin treatments.

These catch basins can hold standing water and become the perfect breeding habitat for various species that are known to transmit viruses.

We use water soluble packets (WSPs) that release chemicals over time, usually approximately 28 days and alternating between active ingredients to prevent resistance.

🦟 It’s Florida Mosquito Control Awareness week!

Throughout the week we will be providing behind the scenes of what goes into our mosquito control program.

To start the week off, we’ll dive into the base of our surveillance and operation programs with our routine inspections.

Our operations team split up all throughout the district and inspect standing water in ditches, retention ponds and even catch basins. Using their dipper tool they can take water samples and identify if there are any mosquito larvae present.

While doing this, the team can take landing rate counts to see how active and abundant the adult mosquitoes are.

The data gathered during these inspections certainly help in the deciding factors on larviciding and adulticiding and which areas need more attention. 🦟🚫
