After my term as an elected representative ended, I've been looking for a place to continue the fight for the oceans in a official capacity. I finally found it. Proud to be a member of this crew!

Over 7 years ago early into my first term I met with a family named the Chapmans. They wanted access to the beach for their entire family, and I let them know that the City had sand wheelchairs available free of charge. They pointed out that our models were not user friendly and there were many more products and systems that were much more effective not only to get to the ocean, but many other areas that we take for granted.

This conversation led to many others and resulted in City of Fernandina Beach Commission's official goal of becoming the most accessible city in Florida for residents and visitors alike. It also resulted in the Chapmans becoming actively involved in our community as board members, city staff and even an elected City Commissioner seat.

So many businesses and private donors immediately jumped in and this is the result.

Today that goal has been recognized in this travel article as most accessible beach in the country!

Thank you to everyone in our amazing community that made this beautiful goal a reality.

We live in a great place and I could not be more proud.

Not much of a "Whodunit".

News Release

On July 19, 2022, the Fernandina Beach Police Department responded to 926 South 8th street in reference to a structure fire.

The building served as an automotive mechanic shop for the property owner. The place of business does not have a business name.

When first responders arrived on scene the building was fully engulfed in flames and ultimately ended up as a total loss. It was later determined that the fire was a result of an arson.

Daniel Rosado was identified as a person of interest. Mr. Rosado was employed at the business and slept in a shed on the property. Mr. Rosado and the business owner had a disagreement earlier that morning which led to Mr. Rosado being terminated. Mr. Rosado stated to multiple individuals in various locations throughout the day that he intended to “burn the place down.”

Approximately one hour before the fire was reported, Mr. Rosado was observed walking down South 9th Street wearing specific clothing. Witnesses observed Mr. Rosado walk into the property at 926 South 8th Street and never exit. After the fire erupted, witnesses reported that Mr. Rosado emitted a strong odor of gasoline.

The State Attorney’s Office was consulted, and an arrest warrant was obtained for the following charges:

1. Second Degree Arson, F.S.S. 806.01(2), 2nd Degree Felony - $75,002.00 Bond
2. Criminal Mischief, F.S.S. 806.13(1)(B)3, 3rd Degree Felony - $25,002.00 Bond
3. Burglary to a Dwelling or Structure with Damage in Excess of $1,000.00, F.S.S. 810.02(2)(C)2, 1st Degree Felony - $100,002.00 Bond

Downtown fire update released at 0930 by the City of Fernandina Beach:::

Well done once again FBFD.

"Cargo Ship Fire Port of Fernandina

At 11:52 PM on June 26th, 2022, units from the Fernandina Beach Fire Department and Nassau County Fire Rescue were dispatched to the report of a ship fire located at 231 N Front Street. The Coast Guard received a distress call from a cargo ship that was docked at the Port of Fernandina’s north terminal pier, reporting a fire in the cargo hold of the vessel. Upon arrival, firefighters found a six-hundred-foot cargo ship with heavy smoke coming from one of the ship’s five cargo holds. The ship’s crew was attempting to extinguish the fire with onboard fire suppression lines upon the arrival of the first fire units. It was determined that a fire had started within the number five cargo hold loaded with stacks of bundled plywood being unloaded at the port.

Firefighters could not enter the cargo hold to attempt to bring the fire under control, so water streams were applied to the compartment from above with hose lines and an aerial apparatus. Due to the unstable nature of the cargo and the unknown location of the fire, firefighters had to flow water into the ship’s cargo compartment continually. Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to other areas of the ship’s compartments.

Thirty-five firefighters battled the fire until 4:18 AM when the fire was determined to be under control. Firefighters officially called the fire out at 6:17 AM. There were no reported injuries to the ship’s crew. One firefighter was transported to Baptist Medical Center Nassau with a non-life-threatening injury. The fire’s origin is unknown and is currently under investigation by the United States Coast Guard Investigations Division. The cause of the fire has not been determined and will take some time due to the condition of the cargo hold."

Russian Genocide Ukraine Update:

-More than 1,800 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since Russia's invasion began on Feb. 24, according to the Office of the U.N

-High Commissioner for Human Rights. The group has also documented nearly 2,500 injured civilians, though it says actual figures for civilian casualties are likely to be "considerably higher."

-A Russian convoy continues moving south toward the town of Izium in eastern Ukraine, which has already been surrounded by heavy fighting, according to the Pentagon. The convoy is believed to be part of Russia's efforts to reposition troops in advance of a major offensive in eastern Ukraine in the coming days. This follows the retreat of Russian troops from Kyiv and other northern cities, leaving tens of thousands of mines in their wake, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

-Ukrainian authorities arrested fugitive oligarch and pro-Russian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk. Zelenskyy shared a photo of handcuffed Medvedchuk, who'd been under house arrest facing accusations of treason but escaped in February.

Guy walks into a bar and says, "I haven't been here for over 25 years and it still looks exactly the same!" We chat him up for his story and turns out that in 1965 he was the first Vice Mayor appointed in Fernandina Beach. Needless to say, we talked a lot!
