🌊 OCEAN RESCUE STAFFING UPDATE 🌊

As we begin to wind down the summer season, Fernandina Beach Ocean Rescue will transition to reduced weekday staffing beginning today, August 10. The locations listed below will have a lifeguard tower staffed.

Monday–Friday | 10:30 AM – 5:00 PM
🏖️ Main Beach Park
🏖️ Seaside Park
🏖️ Peters Point Park

Full weekend staffing will continue through Labor Day.

We encourage everyone to swim near a staffed lifeguard tower, stay aware of beach conditions, and always swim safely.

During the month of August, our SMS Beach Conditions Text Alerts will be temporarily unavailable as we transition to a new text messaging provider.

Don’t worry—our daily beach conditions updates will continue to be available through our Public Safety Dashboard, where you can find the latest information on beach flags, surf conditions, weather, and other important safety updates.

When you’re out enjoying the beach today, make sure to 🇺🇸swim near a lifeguard🇺🇸.

🌊With large crowds, it may be easy for children to get lost, so choosing a meet-up spot (like a lifeguard tower) and keeping children close by is a smart idea.

🏖️Additionally, make sure to seek shade and stay hydrated.

🌊 This week, two of our lifeguards had the chance to speak at the Nassau County Emergency Management TEAM for GIRLS Camp.

This camp aims to encourage and inspire the next generation of young girls to explore careers in law enforcement, fire services, emergency management, and emergency medical services.

Huge thanks to Nassau County Emergency Management for providing our team with this incredible opportunity! Shoutout to GraceAnn Harris and Karen Geisler for sharing tips on ocean safety and for mentoring the next generation of female public safety workers.

Another day, another 500-meter swim 🐠

🌊Every month, our guards complete a physical test consisting of a 500-meter ocean swim in under 10 minutes to maintain their status as ocean lifeguards.

🛟This is one of the many requirements our lifeguards must meet to be ready to jump into action.

FBOR is here with an important reminder:
🚨Stay away from jetties🚨

We understand how tempting it is to venture across these rocks. However, jetties are not designed for recreational activities and pose several dangers.

⚠️At low tide, the rocks may seem like a safe place to explore, but that can quickly change as the tide comes in. This often leaves people stranded on the rocks as the tide covers the way back to shore.

🌊In addition, waves can be irregular and unpredictable, causing individuals to be pushed into sharp, barnacle-covered rocks and suffer serious injuries.

❗Thinking about swimming near a jetty? Often, permanent rip currents form next to jetties due to the constant undulations of the ocean floor and can sweep swimmers out to sea or into sharp rocks.

Stay safe, swim near a lifeguard, and stay away from jetties ☀️

🚨First tryout for the spring recruit academy is this Saturday, April 18th, at 8am at the Atlantic Recreation Center Pool!🚨

- Swim 500 meters in under 10 minutes.
- Tread water for 5 minutes.
- Swim 15 meters underwater.

As the season starts to ramp up, so will our beach staffing. 🏖️ On weekends, beginning April 4th, our lifeguards will be at Main Beach, Seaside Park, and Peters’ Point from 10:30am to 5:00pm. These guards are well-equipped to perform water rescues, first aid, and educate the public on beach safety. 🌊 Don’t hesitate to stop by any of our staffed towers or emergency vehicles if you have any questions.
