Technology can be a powerful tool, but in the wrong hands, it can cause real harm. Learn how AI is being misused by abusers and what we can do to protect DV survivors.

What is AI facilitated abuse? It refers to acts of digital abuse generated and spread by AI technology, resulting in physical, sexual, psychological, social, political, or economic harm, or other infringements of an individual's rights and freedoms.

One of the main ways that it's used to cause harm is through deepfakes. According to research, 90 to 95 percent of all online deepfakes are non-consensual pornographic images, with around 90 percent depicting women. The total number of deepfake videos online in 2023 was 550 percent higher than in 2019. Deepfake po*******hy makes up 98 percent of all deepfake videos online, and 99 percent of the individuals targeted are women.

Many AI systems also collect and store data, often without users fully realizing the extent. Shared devices or accounts may give an abuser access to a survivor’s location, communication, and daily activities.

At Micah's Place, we are here to help give you support and safety. Help is available 24/7 via call or text at 904-225-9979 or through the FL statewide hotline at 1-800-500-1119.

Safety plans for kids are proactive, written documents designed to keep children safe during emergencies. Take the time to explore with them ways they can keep themselves safe should anything happen.

Talk to them and come up with a list of people they can trust and are comfortable speaking to. Make sure they have their numbers available to them.

Know that this time may be difficult for little ones to understand, and don't blame them for the strong feelings that they are experiencing, reassure them and let them know that you will always be there for them and that it isn't their fault.

Our advocates are available to assist you with the safety planning process. Call or text us 24/7 at 904.225.9979.

*Please note names and certain details were changed to protect survivor confidentiality.

This month we had the pleasure of meeting Nina. Choosing to leave her husband in the middle of the night, not only pregnant but with 2 small children under the age of 4, Nina made the decision to ensure a healthier environment for her unborn child and her smaller children. Leaving the only home and state she has known, she fled praying to find safety and stability. Arriving to shelter brought the relief and stability she needed. Being able to finally know that her future was clear and her babies were safe, she was able to begin the process of starting over and getting them situated here in this new place. Between working, the help of distant family, and Micah's Place, Nina was able to find a small apartment for her and the kids allowing her time to prepare just in time for the birth of her new baby.

Do you have these apps on your phone? As a survivor, they could be doing more harm than good.

#1. Life360 - designed to help families and friends stay connected and coordinated. It can be used to see loved ones’ locations, receive notifications when they arrive at and/or leave designated Places, and in the wrong hands it can lead an abuser right to a survivors location in real time.

#2. Calculator% - This app can look like any normal app on your phone but it isn't. It's a vault app which can hide images, files, and data including passwords. An abuser may use different types of stalkerware to monitor you.

#3 Whisper - An anonymous app that promotes sharing personal information and secrets with strangers. It also shares your location so that people can meet up, and while that can seem like harmless fun to some, it can be incredibly dangerous as a survivor of domestic violence.
