I was going thru some of my "stuff" and found these political buttons. I looked up "S. & D. of L." and can't find anything appropriate for this time. I was thinking maybe Sons and Daughters of Liberty, but according to the oracle that group was disband in 1783. Does anyone have any idea what the initials stand for? I was thinking about prohibition but that period was from 1920-1933. I'll keep digging and report if I find anything. Does anyone have any political buttons to share? Keep cool! There's a lot of heat out there - in more ways than one!

This is an 1869 Frenchtiwn press report and is just horrific and sad. It's a glimpse into life post civil war. And I just want to add a little background. The Rev CP Miller was the pastor at St Luke's Lutheran in Ferndale. Their son, Henry A was injured at the battle of Gettysbury in July 1863. Somehow he was able to get home and his mother, Mary, comforted him till his death on July 3, 1863. Henry was 25. The Rev served St Luke's from 1842-1865. He died in 1880 at the age of 74. Mary was 56. They are all buried at St Lukes, behind the bldg on the left, 3 row in right by the stone wall on the right. (Spruance Library)

Last month, the NHC commissioners went to Spruance Library looking for all things Nockamixon. We found these pics of our lake, just as it was opening in 1971.
There's a terrific book called "Our Lost Tohickon Valley" written by Marjorie Goldthorp and Pamela Feist Varkony, published in 2010. It's an extraordinary compilation of pics n stories. Great job ladies!

We were asked about this 1834 public sale notice for a tavern in Nockamixon Twp.
My deduction by the description is this: Bridgeton twp was actually part of Nockamixon until becoming the youngest two in the county in 1896. The only property I know with the canal at its back n River Road in front was the Upper Black Eddy Inn. The attached is a photo from NJ CA 1906.
Sadly, the Inn was demolished in 2010 to make way for condos. The floods of the 2000 ( I don't remember the exact yrs...2006 2008??) Severely damaged the building and I'm guessing flood repair costs plus a need to meet current codes were more than the owner could handle.

Folks, we appreciate your participation and enthusiasm, but this is not a group for general posts, memes, and definitely NOT for anything of a political nature, unless it is directly (and significantly) related to the history of Nockamixon Township. That's what this group is about, Nockamixon history, and that's ALL it is about. There are plenty of pages where you can post that other stuff, and if you don't like what's out there, please create your own. But as for this group, we're going to be deleting ALL posts that are not relevant to Nox history, and if we need to do so more than once, the author will be removed and banned from any further participation in this group. Thanks for understanding our mission.
