Maria didn't expect to need help feeding her family. But when unexpected medical bills piled up, she found herself choosing between groceries and rent. That's when she found the food bank.
"I was so relieved to find fresh vegetables and good food," Maria told us. "But the best part was knowing I could come back. That I wasn't alone."
This is what monthly giving makes possible.
When you become a Neighbor with a monthly gift, families like Maria's can count on us being there, not just once, but every time they need support.
Here's how your monthly gift creates lasting impact:

Good Samaritan: $10 = 15 meals for a household
Next Door Neighbor: $25 = A week of food for one household
Block Captain: $50 = A week of food for two households
Community Builder: $100 = A month of food for one household
Neighborhood Hero: $250 = A month of food for two households

Your sustained support allows us to plan ahead, stock our shelves strategically, and ensure that when someone like Maria walks through our doors, we have what she needs.
Maria visits us twice a month now. Her kids love picking out fresh fruit, and she's back on her feet, working toward stability. But when she still needs us, she knows we'll be here.
That's the power of the Neighborhood.
Thank you for showing up for neighbors like Maria.

This week, the Food Bank has been surveying our shoppers to better determine what kinds of food they would like to see. Here are our Board Chair, Sarah van Woerden, and Treasurer, Katie Slottje, conducting this survey on Monday.

In addition, a similar survey conducted by the University of Washington and Washington State University is being run. The WAFOOD survey collects important information on food access, economic security, and physical and emotional well-being across Washington. These insights help guide state, nonprofit, and community resources to better meet residents’ needs.

Pinto beans are a staple at the Ferndale Food Bank, and can be used in a variety of recipes! If you have any favorite recipes that contain pinto beans, be sure to share them in the comments!

1. Add the garlic and oil to a pot, and sauté over medium heat for about one minute, or just until the garlic is very fragrant.
2. Add one can of pinto beans to a blender, or by hand, with the liquid in the can, and mix until smooth.
3. Add the puréed beans to the saucepot with the garlic, stir to combine.
4. Season the beans with the smoked paprika, cumin, and pepper. Stir to combine, then heat through over medium, stirring occasionally.
5. Finally, add the shredded cheddar and stir until it has melted smoothly into the beans. Taste the beans and adjust the seasoning to your liking. Serve over rice or with your favorite meal.

Did you know that anyone in Whatcom County can use our Food Bank? You don’t need any proof of income, ID, or documentation. If using the Ferndale Food Bank makes the most sense for you and your household, then we are here to get you food. We’re thankful to work with the Whatcom County Food Bank Network to make sure everyone in our community has access to healthy, fresh food.
When you shop at the Food Bank, you are welcome to shop for your household and up to two others. You can do this by filling out a check-in form for all households you plan on shopping for on your trip. When you visit, we aim to provide at least the following for all households:
· 5-6 pantry staples/dried goods
· 1 gallon of milk
· 1 dozen eggs
· 3 protein items
· 4-5 produce items
· 1-2 bakery or bread items
We also have diapers and formula for children under five years old.
The Ferndale Food Bank is here to support all shoppers who walk through our doors.

On March 3rd, students, families, and staff got together to generously donate over 2,400 lbs of food. This will help us feed over 80 households. But they didn't stop there! They also raised $918 in cash donations to help stock the shelves at the food bank.
Thank you, Vista Middle School, for helping to stop hunger in our community!

🌱 Ferndale Food Bank Garden needs your help!🌱

Have you heard about the First Fruits Garden? Tucked inside the Ferndale Community Garden, this special section is dedicated to growing fresh produce for the Ferndale Food Bank. The garden crew harvested over 7,000 lbs. of organic fruits and veggies last summer, delivering some of the highest quality produce we can offer our shoppers.

The garden’s long-time coordinator is stepping down, and we are looking for a volunteer gardener or team of gardeners to step into his role! The Garden Coordinator oversees all aspects of operating the Food Bank garden, including growing and volunteer management.

If you have a green thumb and are interested in helping to nourish our community, one veggie at a time, please email Keelan at [email protected] for more info.
