The Fernley Senior Citizens Advisory Committee (FSCAC) would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the local businesses and Fernley residents who answered the call to help community members in need stay cool this summer.

Thanks to your generosity, we have collected more than 60 fans and over $2,000 in donations to support this important effort. All donors were recognized and thanked during this morning's meeting for their contributions and commitment to helping others in our community.

As a friendly reminder, FSCAC will be hosting its fan distribution event tomorrow on the corner of Main Street and Silver Lace Blvd. Residents in need are encouraged to stop by and pick up a donated fan while supplies last.

This program is a great example of what makes Fernley special—neighbors helping neighbors. Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, and helped spread the word.

Together, we're making a difference.

Today, the City of Fernley, Lyon County Sheriff's Department, and Waste Management partnered together to begin cleaning and preparing the 11-acre parcel proposed to become Fernley's future Community Garden and Pumpkin Patch.

This collaborative effort marks an exciting first step toward transforming the property into a community asset that will provide educational, recreational, and family-friendly opportunities for residents for years to come.

In just over five hours of work, volunteers and staff cleared approximately 300 square feet of debris and unwanted materials from the site. While there is still a great deal of work ahead, today's progress demonstrates the power of community partnerships and shared commitment to improving Fernley.

A special thank you goes to Waste Management for donating a dumpster to support the cleanup effort. Their contribution helped ensure that debris could be removed efficiently and responsibly, making today's work even more impactful.

The City would also like to thank the Lyon County Sheriff's Office and their inmate crew who contributed their time and effort to this project. We look forward to continuing the cleanup and sharing updates as plans for the future Community Garden and Pumpkin Patch move forward.

Together, we're building something special for the Fernley community.

Planning Department Monthly Update – May 2026

The City of Fernley Planning Department continues to support responsible growth and development throughout our community.

During May, staff processed multiple Temporary Use Permits for upcoming community events, including the Fernley 4th of July Celebration, Food Trucks, Brews & Tunes, AMP Monster Trucks, and other local events. The department also reviewed new development applications, including the proposed River Ranch Back 40 Apartments project, which would bring 56 multi-family residential units to Fernley.

Current Planning Department statistics include:
• 20 active development projects
• Average project processing time of 2.4 months
• 2,531 customer contacts year-to-date
• Continued work on the Comprehensive Master Plan, Impact Fee Study, Development Code Update, and other long-range planning initiatives.

Looking ahead, public engagement for the Comprehensive Master Plan is expected to begin this summer, providing residents with opportunities to help shape Fernley’s future.

The City would also like to congratulate Jim Umbach on his promotion from Planning Technician to Assistant Planner. Jim has played an important role in supporting development review, public outreach, and special event permitting, and we look forward to his continued contributions to the community.

On June 4, Mayor Neal McIntyre had the pleasure of recognizing five outstanding Cottonwood Elementary students with the Mayor’s Citizenship Award:

Audrey Wagner – Kindergarten
Richmond Ignacio – 1st Grade
Isaac Bustamante – 2nd Grade
Mia Reyes-Calvillo – 3rd Grade
Iker Tolentino – 4th Grade

This award is made possible through a partnership between the City of Fernley, Lyon County School District, and All Points Grill, and recognizes students who go above and beyond by demonstrating kindness, respect, engagement, and good citizenship both in and out of the classroom.

While we celebrate these students today, we also recognize the parents, grandparents, teachers, mentors, and role models who help guide and encourage them every step of the way. Their support plays an important role in helping these young leaders grow and succeed.

Congratulations to all of our award recipients! Thank you for setting a positive example for your classmates and community. Fernley is proud of you, and we look forward to seeing all you accomplish in the future.

Great things are happening in our schools, and these students are proof of that.
