We are heartbroken about the passing of Matt Foutz. He was always eager to mentor Ferrum College interns and student teachers. Our teacher-candidates learned so much under his watchful care. We are forever grateful to have known him.

Coach Foutz was a foundational piece of Franklin County Athletics. Many of our basketball players were coached and taught by him and his son has came out to the courts with us numerous times. Our founder, Janelle Sweeney had Coach Foutz in Strength and Conditioning all 4 of her highschool years. “Coach Foutz was the one who made me fall in love with lifting weights. Highschool was where I was introduced to the weight room environment and once I started I never wanted to leave. He helped me grow to become a better basketball player just through basic fundamentals that helped me gain strength. He was proud of us girls and would take pictures of us holding up our 50, 60lb dumbbell push press as we’d reach our goals. He encouraged each one of us and we all physically and mentally saw that growth. While he mostly coached boys, it never stopped him from pushing us girls just as hard. I remember everyday after we’d go to the locker room to get dressed to go home for the day after workouts he’d be standing there with a green apple waiting on us to come out. We laughed about how healthy he was. I left highschool with a passion for the weight room and seeing other athletes get stronger and succeed. I went to college with the mindset of “I want to be like Coach Foutz and strengthen young athletes”. My dream job was to become a Strength and Conditioning coach like him one day. I can’t believe it’s already been four years since I last had him as my coach. Just 3 weeks ago I started my first job out of college as a middle school PE teacher. It was during one of my classes today that I found out he had passed and I could only think that he would be proud looking down on me seeing that I was on my way to doing what I always dreamed of doing. All the athletes that I get to coach in the future are going to know about this man and the impact he made on me!”

If made an impact on you, don’t hesitate to comment below! These special memories need to be shared. Holland and Eli your dad will always be looked up to and remembered! This ministry and church family has you all in its prayers. 🤍🕊
