Today’s car wash was a huge success, and we want to send a heartfelt thank you to the entire Ferrum community for the incredible support.

To everyone who stopped by, donated, brought their vehicles out, shared our posts- thank you. Your continued support means more to us than words can express. Events like this help us continue serving our community and maintaining the equipment and resources needed to respond when called upon.

A special thank you to all of our volunteers who gave up their Saturday morning to help wash vehicles. We’re also extremely grateful to our local businesses and supporters who donated supplies and helped make today possible.

We are proud to serve such a strong and supportive community. Thank you again from all of us at Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department.

Tonight, the members of the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department held our regular training meeting a little differently - with a special presentation to our Auxiliary.

Our Auxiliary plays a vital role in supporting the department and our community. While they may not be the ones responding to emergency calls, they are always working behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. From organizing fundraisers and community events, to providing rehab support at incidents, assisting with administrative tasks, and helping care for our members, the Auxiliary is an essential part of our fire family.

Their dedication allows our firefighters to focus on emergency response, knowing they have a strong support system standing behind them.

If you’ve ever wanted to give back to your community but aren’t interested in fighting fires, the Auxiliary is a great way to get involved. We are always looking for individuals who want to make a difference and be part of something bigger.

Interested in joining or learning more? Reach out to us, we’d love to have you on the team! 🚒

Yesterday; Pumper 3, Brush 3, and Tanker 3 responded to assist with a brush fire in the area of Fairystone Park Road. Officials with the Virginia Department of Forestry estimated the fire to be approximately 20 acres in size.

Multiple agencies worked together to bring the incident under control, including Fairystone Fire (27), Woolwine Fire (24), Jeb Stuart Rescue (Station 3), and Patrick County (Station 6), Henry Fire (14), Ferrum Fire (3), Callaway Fire (5), Rocky Mount Fire (1), Fork Mountain Fire (8), Franklin County Fire & EMS and the Virginia Department of Forestry.

We would like to thank all responding agencies for their teamwork and dedication in protecting our community. We would also like to extend a special thank you to those who provided food and rehab support for crews on scene—your generosity and support do not go unnoticed and are greatly appreciated.

🚫 Reminder: Virginia’s 4 PM Burning Law is currently in effect (February 15 – April 30).

The 4 PM Burning Law bans open-air burning prior to 4:00 p.m. if the fire is within 300 feet of the woods or dry grass which could carry fire to the woods. Burning is allowed between 4:00 p.m. and midnight as long as the burner takes proper precautions and attends the fire at all times.

Please do your part to help prevent wildfires and keep our community safe.

Ferrum VFD is saddened to hear of the passing of Gary Shively. Gary was a member of our Board of Directors for several years and was always willing to help us out on our breakfasts every year. We will surely miss him. Thank you Gary for your service to Ferrum VFD and the citizens of Franklin County.
Beth Shively , Garrett Shively and Walker Shively we love you all!

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of retired Deputy Gary Shively following a short illness.

Deputy Shively dedicated 42 years of his adult life to serving the citizens of our county as a deputy sheriff. He began his career in the Corrections Division before moving into Patrol and later Investigations.

After retiring from full-time service in 2013, Gary continued his commitment to public service by returning in a part-time role as a court bailiff, where he served until his final retirement in March of 2025.

Gary’s legacy of service extends beyond his own remarkable career. He leaves behind a proud tradition of public service through both of his sons.

His oldest son, Garrett, joined the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department in 2002, advancing through the ranks to Junior Advisor and Lieutenant. In 2016, Garrett joined Franklin County’s career fire service as a Firefighter/EMT.

Gary’s younger son, Walker, joined the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and has served in both the Corrections and Patrol Divisions, where he continues to do so with the same honor and distinction as his father.

Gary was immensely proud of his sons and the paths they chose in service to their community.

The Office of the Sheriff extends our deepest sympathies to Gary’s wife, Beth; his sons, Garrett and Walker; and the entire Shively family as they navigate this difficult time.
