Ferrum VFD is saddened to hear of the passing of Gary Shively. Gary was a member of our Board of Directors for several years and was always willing to help us out on our breakfasts every year. We will surely miss him. Thank you Gary for your service to Ferrum VFD and the citizens of Franklin County.
Beth Shively , Garrett Shively and Walker Shively we love you all!
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of retired Deputy Gary Shively following a short illness.
Deputy Shively dedicated 42 years of his adult life to serving the citizens of our county as a deputy sheriff. He began his career in the Corrections Division before moving into Patrol and later Investigations.
After retiring from full-time service in 2013, Gary continued his commitment to public service by returning in a part-time role as a court bailiff, where he served until his final retirement in March of 2025.
Gary’s legacy of service extends beyond his own remarkable career. He leaves behind a proud tradition of public service through both of his sons.
His oldest son, Garrett, joined the Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department in 2002, advancing through the ranks to Junior Advisor and Lieutenant. In 2016, Garrett joined Franklin County’s career fire service as a Firefighter/EMT.
Gary’s younger son, Walker, joined the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in 2014 and has served in both the Corrections and Patrol Divisions, where he continues to do so with the same honor and distinction as his father.
Gary was immensely proud of his sons and the paths they chose in service to their community.
The Office of the Sheriff extends our deepest sympathies to Gary’s wife, Beth; his sons, Garrett and Walker; and the entire Shively family as they navigate this difficult time.
