The Parenting Network is a program with Jefferson County Community Partnership
Sometimes “How was school?” feels like the easiest question to ask, but it can be the hardest one for a child to answer.
Try connection before questions.
Sit beside them. Draw together. Share something about your own day. Ask something specific, like “Who made you laugh today?” or “What surprised you?”
And if they say, “I don’t want to talk,” respect that too.
The goal isn’t to get answers on demand. It’s to help your child learn, “When I talk, my parent makes room for me.”
Listen before teaching. Connection first, conversation follows.
