🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

We have received reports of scammers impersonating court and law enforcement officials by spoofing phone numbers to make it appear that the call is coming from our office.

The caller tells individuals that they missed jury duty, that there is a warrant for their arrest, and that they must pay money immediately to have the warrant removed or avoid being taken into custody.

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM.

Please remember:
- We do not call people demanding payment for missed jury duty.
- We do not accept payments over the phone to clear warrants or avoid arrest.
- We will never request payment through gift cards, prepaid cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or mobile payment apps.
- Caller ID can be manipulated and may falsely display phone numbers.

If you receive one of these calls:
• Hang up immediately.
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money.

Our hearts are heavy as we learn of the tragic events that occurred last night in Carroll County, resulting in the loss of a deputy and injuries to another while serving their community.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the fallen deputy, and we keep the injured deputy, their loved ones, and the entire Carroll County Sheriff's Office in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

Every day, law enforcement officers answer calls without knowing what dangers they may face. This tragedy is a heartbreaking reminder of the risks they willingly take in service to their communities.

We also ask our community to keep in their thoughts the law enforcement officers and first responders who continue working tirelessly to bring this incident to a safe resolution and ensure justice is served.

We are asking residents to please check their vehicles, sheds, garages, and any other outbuildings for signs of tampering or missing items. We also ask that anyone with home security cameras or doorbell cameras review footage for any suspicious activity that may have occurred between approximately 2:00 AM and 4:00 AM this morning.

If you notice anything suspicious or have camera footage that may assist investigators, please contact Lieutenant Haynes (540) 928-2246.

We appreciate the community’s assistance and encourage everyone to lock vehicles and secure valuables.

Congratulations to our Sheriff Student Scholarship Program Recipients!

Sheriff Ward presented the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office second annual Sheriff Student Scholarships to two exceptional high school seniors during last week’s senior awards ceremonies held at both James River High School and Lord Botetourt High School.

Each student received a $1,000 scholarship, aimed at supporting local students in their pursuit of higher education. The recipients, seniors Kaia Binns from James River and Forest Wagner from Lord Botetourt, were selected for their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to community service.

This initiative was made possible through our Community Outreach Program supported by the generosity of community members and our local community business partners. To be eligible, applicants were required to be Botetourt County residents with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and planning to attend a Virginia college, university, or technical education program. The application process included an essay, academic transcripts, a letter of recommendation, and a demonstration of leadership and consistent community engagement.

We are incredibly grateful to the community for supporting the educational pursuits of our youth. This scholarship is one way we can give back and help empower the next generation of leaders.
