On June 17, 1905, a horrific train wreck occurred near Patapsco involving a 2 engine freight train and a passenger train called the Blue Mountain Express. Not much is found on the Internet about this crash that injured many and cost 28 people their lives (26 at the crash, 2 more later), but the attached newspaper article written by Mrs. Rose Marie Caple von Gunten is the best read about the crash. Her father was there and this is his account of the accident.
Eighteen of the men who died were from Thurmont. It was said that not a family in Thurmont wasn't affected by the crash.

Remembering the life of Mrs. Vera Blum who went home to be with our Lord on May 11, 2026.
Mrs. Vera was greatly involved with the community, showed kindness and love to everyone she encountered, and lived a life of unwavering faith.
In her later years, she moved in with her daughter in Virginia, and some may have lost contact with her. There will be a Memorial Service at the Patapsco UM Church on Saturday, June 27th at 10:00AM.
