We are so grateful for the members of the Task Force who spent months sharing their time and their valuable insights as they learned about all aspects of the important work of Juvenile Court, to put together this thoughtful recommendation for a new Pierce County Youth and Family Justice Center. Thank you to all of our community and court partners as well as volunteers, who have shared their voices during this process as well, to ensure the best for children, young people and families in Pierce County. See below for more details and to read the full report.

We've released the final report and recommendations from the Juvenile Justice Task Force for the new Juvenile Justice Center.

The report, titled "Defining a Vision for a New Pierce County Family and Youth Justice Center," lays out a comprehensive vision for replacing Remann Hall, the County's outdated juvenile justice facility. Pierce County Juvenile Court provides oversight and operation of the facility.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and we want to recognize those in our community who celebrate children and wrap around to support them and their families. This is a time to remember the importance of positive childhood experiences and each of us have a role to play in impacting the experiences children have every day. đź’™

If you have noticed the pinwheels planted on our front lawn, they are used this month to represent the childlike whimsy and lightheartedness, as well as the vision for a world where all children grow up happy, healthy, and prepared to succeed in supportive families and communities.

Pierce County Executive Ryan N Mello launched a Juvenile Justice Task Force back in August to address the aging Remann Hall facility, the County’s primary juvenile justice facility. A new online open house has been created to share information about the Juvenile Justice Center project and gather community input.

The online open house gives you an inside look at what goes on at Remann Hall, why the facility needs updates, plus you’ll hear testimonials from Task Force members about the work they’ve been doing.

Check out the online open house to learn more and take a short survey to share your thoughts. The survey closes March 4.

NWPB recently highlighted the impact of our probation transformation work. The piece lifts up our Opportunity-Based Probation model, developed in partnership with the University of Washington CoLab, and the important role our Positive Youth Development program partners play in supporting young people.

We’re grateful to see the work of a couple of our partners, Alchemy Skateboarding and Hilltop Artists recognized! This shows what’s possible when we invest in community-based approaches that create opportunity, connection, and better outcomes for youth.

Take a moment to read or listen when you have a chance ⬇️

Pierce County does juvenile probation differently.About a decade ago, the county created a program it calls Opportunity-Based Probation. The program rewards good choices and behaviors. That’s different from the more traditional model that punishes kids for messing up.
