"Roots of Liberty" Garden Project to Commemorate The Nation's 250th Anniversary:

The Verplanck Garden Club (VGC) of Fishkill will honor the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by creating seven (7) new gardens at important historic locations in Fishkill and Beacon. Featuring red, white and blue flowers, the seven gardens will be anchored by a 5-foot-tall colonial soldier silhouette, crafted of metal. Each soldier is uniquely designed to hold a flag, a musket, or a drum.
The “Roots of Liberty” garden project, is partially funded by the Verplanck Garden Club and by the Town of Fishkill, who will later place the statues in their Garden of Heroes at the Town Hall complex. The soldier silhouettes were manufactured and installed by Robert Van Winkle, a master metalworker and restorer of important statues such as Sybil Luddington, another famous Revolutionary-era heroine.
The soldiers have been installed at the various historical sites selected for the Roots of Liberty project. The Fishkill sites include the First Reformed Church, the Van Wyck Homestead Museum, Trinity Church, the Rombout Rural Cemetery, the Brinkerhoff Inn, the Daniel Nimham statue, and in Beacon, the Madam Brett homestead and Mount Gulian. The flowers will be planted in mid-May.
The image is AI generated and depicts the gardens as they will appear by mid-summer. The red, white and blue combination will be repeated at all the gardens.

On May 13 the Town Board held a Special Town Board Meeting. The purpose of this meeting was to view a presentation given by Town Supervisor Ozzy Albra regarding a Revolutionary War Burial Ground. After viewing the many Historical references relating to this site, the Board was then asked to vote on a resolution declaring and dedicating this burial ground. Before the roll call vote was taken, each Town Board member gave an impassioned and heartfelt speech as to the importance of this action. By a unanimous 5-0 vote the resolution passed. This Bipartisan agreement shows that when it comes to remembering and preserving Fishkill History we stand united. The Town of Fishkill played a paramount role in securing our Nation's freedom. Let the brave souls whose bones lie in the field rest a little easier knowing this: That We The People of Fishkill will NEVER let them be forgotten.....

On May 11, 2026, the owners of property at the corner of Van Wyck Lake Road and State Route 9 filed an application in the federal court seeking to stop the Town from holding its special meeting tonight (May 13, 2026) concerning a commemorative Town Board resolution to recognize an American Revolutionary War burial ground in the Town of Fishkill. This morning, the Town's attorneys and the property owner's attorneys appeared in federal court in White Plains before the Honorable Vincent L. Briccetti regarding the property owner's application for an injunction.

I am pleased to report that the federal court has denied the property owner's motion on all grounds and tonight's meeting will proceed, as scheduled, at 7:00 p.m. at the Town Hall.

Please see the following very important message from the Town of Fishkill Highway Department:

Our Highway crews are still hard at work cleaning up after the storm. We asks residents with fire hydrants on their property to do their part by clearing 3 feet on all sides. Clear hydrants mean faster access during emergencies, when every second counts.
