Dane County Emergency Management honors those who died while serving the nation in the armed forces. Our offices are closed today in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

If you are heading out for the holiday weekend, make safety a part of your travel plans. Pack an emergency kit for your vehicle that includes a cell phone charger, fresh water, snacks, and a map. Check road conditions using a trusted source. Document your travel plans and make sure a family member or close friend knows where you are going and how to reach you.

Dane County Emergency Management was among multiple agencies that worked to coordinate a Protecting Places of Worship Workshop earlier this week in Middleton. This annual event brings together representatives of faith communities, law enforcement, and other public safety partners to share information and resources that can help improve security and protect people.

Our thanks to Blackhawk Church for hosting this important event this year. Thank you as well to the hard work and dedication of our partners, including the Dane County Sheriff's Office, the Madison Police Department, and many others for your contributions that made this event a success!

May 17-23 is Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week and we want to thank everyone serving on the frontlines of providing care. The men and women who work in EMS here in Dane County and across the nation play an important part in saving lives.

The theme of EMS Week this year is “Improving Outcomes, Together.” It offers an opportunity to focus on the many ways EMS providers collaborate across disciplines to serve the best interests of patients. Thank you!

Bowing line of storms over NE/SD/IA border will be the focus for southern WI storms tonight. Expect this line to track east along & south of the warm front and may be capable of bringing severe wind gusts to to area later tonight.

Did you know that Dane County’s outdoor warning sirens only activate in the area covered by a warning? The county uses a zone-based method for activations, so only sirens directly affected by the areas included in a Tornado Warning or a Severe Thunderstorm Warning with the “Destructive” tag will sound. That warning area is set by the National Weather Service office in Milwaukee/Sullivan.

Sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of every month at noon, unless there is a risk of severe weather on that day.
