It's times like this where, in addition to processing our own feelings, we also have to hold the complex feelings of the young people we serve. They have inherited a world, not of their making, that is increasingly more challenging. As always, Briarpatch has a Helpline for young people in crisis or just needing to talk. We can be reached at (608) 251-1126.

Additionally, Briarpatch's Restorative Justice Team has been processing recent events with youth in an Open Circle, group format. The team will host an additional gathering this Thursday, 7/30 at the Goodman South Madison Library from 3:00 - 5:00PM.

Any youth who would like to continue the conversation about Corey Ruiz and related events, is invited to join the conversation and be in community with the Restorative Justice team.

Today, many of us have a heavy heart after learning about/witnessing the video of a Black man being shot, and killed, by a police officer yesterday. We know, both historically and present day, these incidents happen with too much regularity in our country. The pain is amplified when it's in our community. This incident happened just down the block from where Tony Robinson was killed in 2015, and echoes of that incident are reactivated for many of us in Madison. For those in our community who knew Corey Ruiz (whose life was taken), we, at Briarpatch, want to extend our deepest condolences to you. We can't imagine your pain and rage. Our hearts go out to his family and loved ones.

It's times like this where, in addition to processing our own feelings, we also have to hold the complex feelings of the young people we serve. Many youth felt compelled to protest and share their pain and rage, last night. We see them and honor their voice and their rights. They have inherited a world, not of their making, that is increasingly more challenging. Here, at Briarpatch, will be discussing what happened in our own programs/groups. It's hard to do this when our own wounds are fresh, but we continue to walk alongside youth through life's most difficult challenges.

As always, Briarpatch has a Helpline for young people in crisis or just needing to talk. We can be reached at (608) 251-1126.
