August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day. It’s an opportunity to recognize that overdose affects people from every walk of life and that each of them is a person who is loved and valued.

Through initiatives such as placing harm reduction vending machines in the community, our team continues its work to prevent overdose and reduce the harm it causes.

During sudden cardiac arrest, the chances of survival increase greatly if CPR is started right away. For farmers it may take extra time for EMS crews to arrive on scene, making it important that those around them know how to perform hands-only CPR.

Dane County EMS was able to work alongside our partners from Cross Plains Area EMS this week to help train farmers in this life-saving skill.

Our thanks to Yahara Pride Farms for coordinating this important learning opportunity.

Dane County Emergency Management’s EMS Division was proud to help host the county’s Cardiac Arrest Survivor Celebration, which took place this past Friday night in Madison. This annual event recognizes the survivors of cardiac arrest and the many people who helped them, while also highlighting the partnerships that make a high quality of care possible in Dane County.

This year, we celebrated the 42 cardiac arrest survivors saved between April 2025 and April 2026 by first responders, 911 staff, bystanders and hospitals.

Congratulations to Dane County Emergency Management staff Eric and Kailey, who were finalists for ImageTrend’s 2026 Hooley Award for Innovation!

They were recognized for using EMS data to help create targeted harm-reduction efforts in Dane County, which includes the distribution of HOPE Kits and identifying the placement of harm reduction vending machines in the community. This project is just one example of how Dane County EMS takes a data-driven approach to harm reduction, focused on reducing unnecessary deaths from overdose in Dane County.

ALERT! There is an increased risk of drug overdose in our community at this time possibly fueled by extreme heat.

On June 29 and 30, first responders reported at least seven suspected opiate-involved overdoses and several other related incidents.

When temperatures climb, keep safety in mind. People and pets should never be left in parked vehicles, especially on hot days when temperatures inside them can rise to dangerous levels very quickly. Look before you lock!
