Fire Sprinkler System Saves Apartment
At approximately 8:06 a.m. on August 21, 2026, Dane County Public Safety Communications (911) notified the Fitchburg Fire Department of a reported alarm at 2101 Post Road in the City of Fitchburg.
Upon arrival, first responders reported alarms sounding throughout the building and smoke in the hallways. Fire personnel located a stove fire in one of the units that had already been extinguished by the building’s sprinkler system. Crews confirmed the fire was fully out, checked for extension, and ventilated the affected unit and hallway.
The unit where the fire occurred sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported. Residents were able to remain in their units, and the building was deemed safe for occupancy.
The fire was determined to be accidental and related to unattended cooking.
The department reminds everyone that cooking remains one of the leading causes of residential fires. Stay in the kitchen when using the stovetop, keep combustibles away from heat sources, and ensure appliances are turned off before leaving the area.
This incident demonstrates how quickly fire sprinkler systems respond and how effectively they prevent injuries, limit property damage, and stop fires from spreading. Residents and building owners are encouraged to report any issues with sprinkler heads, water flow alarms, or system maintenance needs to ensure these critical life‑safety systems remain fully operational.
