This week the Fitzgerald Police Department conducted our monthly in-service training. The topic trained on was Basic Room Clearing Techniques. The practical exercise was done using semunitions, which is similar to paint ball guns. The weapons used are very similar to the weapons that are issued to officers. This was a what is called Force on Force training. It is as close to real life scenarios as we can have. The training puts officers in difficult situations and teaches them to work through the objective of a "real world" encounter as safely and effectively as possible. The classroom portion was done at the police department training room. The practical scenarios were done at the old Fitzgerald High School.
We would like to thank the Ben Hill Co. Board of Education, Roger Merritt and Superintendent Steve Hardin for their willingness to help the police department make our officers as safe as possible.

We are excited to announce that our new joint agency App is now available for download. The Fitzgerald Police Department and Chief Smallwood teamed up with the Ben-Hill Sheriff's Office and Sheriff Lee Cone to create an App for the public to be able to access information. Our hopes are that with this App we can more effectively communicate with our community and provide information to our citizens in efforts to be able to serve the citizens of Fitzgerald and Ben-Hill County better. You will find the App provides several links to various things and that it will be used to inform the public of important information. Download the App today and stayed informed. We will be offering a public safety shooting course available to everyone on Saturday, March 2nd 2024 at the firing range here in Ben-Hill County. Anyone interested in attending should come to the Police Department and sign up. The sign up includes free background check done for the course. Come by and get registered before all the spots fill up. You can only participate if you are signed up. Thank you.
