If you use air conditioning, a fan will allow you to raise the thermostat setting about 4°F with no reduction in comfort. Just make sure to turn it off when you leave the room (fans cool people, not rooms).

Summer tip from DOE Weatherization:One more reason to make the switch to CFLs, only about 10 to 15 percent of the electricity that incandescent lights consume results in light -- the rest is turned into heat.

Must haves if the power goes out:
We all know the basics, flash light, batteries, etc. but in addition to these have Blue-ice packs and a cooler for your medications. enough water for two days, minimum, and a first aid kit or disaster prepared backpack. Make sure that all family members know your household disaster plan and have your utility company's phone number.
