NAU Police

NAU Police This page features the Northern Arizona University Police Department (and its divisions), which serves the campus and community in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The NAU Police Department has primary jurisdiction for all law enforcement matters occurring on the Flagstaff Mountain Campus and is authorized to employ twenty-one police officers. NAU police officers are duly sworn peace officers, certified by the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). Each officer is required to maintain the same skills, training, and qualifications as oth

er police officers in the state, and in many cases receives even more specialized training in order to serve the university community. NAU police officers are authorized to carry fi****ms and are empowered to enforce state and federal laws (apprehend and arrest) within the limits imposed by the state and federal constitutions and judicial rulings. The department and its members have the duty and authority to provide police and other quality safety services to the mountain campus to include crime prevention activities, responding to calls for service, investigating crimes, arresting violators, and offering educational programs to enhance personal safety. The NAU Police Department is a nationally accredited professional law enforcement organization. The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) awarded NAU PD its first accreditation award in 1995 at which time the NAU Police Department was the sixth police department in Arizona and the ninth university police department in the United States to achieve accreditation. In March 2015, CALEA awarded the NAU Police Department its seventh re-accreditation. The department was re-accredited under CALEA’s Gold Standard and was also awarded the “With Excellence” designation.

Ofc O'Donnell and Ofc Straub represented NAUPD at the conclusion of the spring season of Healthy Kids Running Series at Buffalo Park. This non-profit has provided fitness inspiration for Flagstaff families since 2012, and NAUPD was pleased to cheer and celebrate these young local athletes. Ofc O'Donnell distributed medals and educated some of the participants about our police equipment, and Ofc Straub awarded trophies to the top finishers, as well as raffle prizes. Congratulations to all for getting up and getting going!
