Congratulations to Flagstaff Fire Department’s 2026 Firefighter of the Year, David Ortiz!
At the Exchange Club of Flagstaff’s First Responders Luncheon, the annual Firefighter of the Year awards ceremony took place, recognizing firefighters for their dedication, service, and commitment to their communities.
Each year, our Firefighter of the Year is selected by the people who know the job best: their fellow firefighters. This year, that honor went to Firefighter/Paramedic David Ortiz.
David exemplifies what it means to be a firefighter, not through one extraordinary incident, but through his consistent dedication to the profession, his department, and the people around him.
His commitment to excellence is evident in everything he does. From his dedication to physical fitness and professional development to advancing his skills as a paramedic, David continually strives to be better for his crew and the community he serves.
But David’s impact extends far beyond his responsibilities on shift.
As the founder of the House of Jacks mentorship program, David has dedicated countless hours to preparing and mentoring the next generation of firefighters. He proudly serves on the department’s Honor Guard and remains actively involved in advocating for his fellow firefighters and the future of the fire service.
Perhaps most importantly, David is the kind of person others genuinely look forward to working alongside. He leads by example, treats people with respect, and consistently gives more of himself than the job requires.
Being Firefighter of the Year isn’t always about one remarkable act. Sometimes, it’s about showing up every day and being remarkable in the way you serve.
David, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition. We are proud to have you representing the Flagstaff Fire Department.
