This month, Flagstaff Fire Department crews have been sharpening their EMS skills with hands-on airway training at Coconino Community College.

Managing a patient’s airway is one of the most critical skills our firefighter/EMTs and paramedics may be called upon to perform. During this lab, crews worked through airway management techniques and equipment, focusing on hands-on practice, skill development, and repetition using simulation manikins.

That repetition matters. Emergency scenes are fast-moving, stressful, and rarely textbook. Regular training gives our crews the opportunity to practice these skills in a controlled environment so that when seconds count, the fundamentals are second nature.

Responding to 911 calls is only part of what happens at FFD. Throughout the year, our members train across the many disciplines that make up the fire service—from emergency medicine and fire suppression to technical rescue, hazardous materials, wildland firefighting, and more.

Yesterday, Flagstaff Fire Department responded to two separate water-related emergencies — one at Francis Short Pond and another at Lake Mary.

While water emergencies may not be something we encounter as frequently as fire departments in communities with more residential pools, yesterday was an important reminder that drowning can happen anywhere there is water.

As we head into the holiday weekend, please keep water safety in mind:

• Keep children within arm’s reach around water — even in shallow areas.
• Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating, paddling or recreating on open water.
• Never swim alone.
• Avoid alcohol when swimming or supervising others around water.
• Remember that natural bodies of water can have hazards you can’t see from shore, including sudden drop-offs, uneven terrain and changing conditions.
• If someone is struggling in the water, call 911 immediately and avoid putting yourself in danger attempting a rescue.

Pools aren’t the only places where drowning happens. Ponds, lakes and other natural bodies of water deserve the same attention and respect.

Sometimes the people who are struggling the most aren’t the ones who show it. Take a moment to check in with your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors. Ask how they’re doing—and take the time to really listen.

And if you’re the one struggling, you don’t have to navigate it alone. Reaching out for help is a step worth taking.

Want to become a firefighter? This could be your opportunity.

For the first time, the Greater Flagstaff Region will be hosting a Green Academy, creating a pathway for qualified candidates to enter the fire service without already holding Firefighter I & II certifications.

Applications open September 21, 2026, and candidates with or without current Firefighter I/II certification are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must meet the minimum requirements, including holding a current Arizona and/or National Registry EMT or CEP certification within the required timeframe. This hiring cycle will not include a separate lateral process.

The Greater Flagstaff Region hiring process represents Flagstaff Fire Department, Highlands Fire District, Pinewood Fire District, Summit Fire & Medical District, and Flagstaff Airport Fire.

Applications open September 21 and close November 15, 2026.

Hey Flagstaff,

We have received many calls over the last two days about smoke in the area. The smoke we are all seeing is coming into town from a controlled fire being conducted at Camp Navajo military base. These fires were originally lightning strikes but with the monsoon activity and favorable conditions they are being utilized to help clean up our forests. This form of management is extremely important and has been proven to help firefighters during wildfire season.

This week, the Flagstaff Fire Department had the opportunity to host four recruits from the Navajo Nation Fire Department for live-fire training.

The recruits worked through realistic scenarios focused on fire behavior, fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation, and propane fire response. Each evolution gave them the opportunity to build skills and confidence while operating in a live-fire environment.

This marks the third consecutive year FFD has had the privilege of supporting training for Navajo Nation firefighters. That partnership goes both ways. The Navajo Nation Fire Chief has also contributed to an FFD recruit academy by providing cultural awareness training to our members—an experience that strengthened our understanding of the communities and neighbors we serve.

Training together makes all of us better. We’re grateful for the continued partnership with the Navajo Nation Fire Department and look forward to more opportunities to learn from one another and strengthen our ability to serve our communities.
