Cynthia Nemeth, Parks and Recreation Director, has been appointed acting Deputy County Manager following the resignation of Eric Peterson.

Nemeth has served in her role as Parks and Recreation Director for more than nine years and brings valuable experience, knowledge of our organization and a strong commitment to the people we serve.

She has overseen the acquisition of Gonzalez Ranch, Rogers Lake Natural Area and Matt Ryan Natural Area, added miles and improvements to the trail system and updated both the Parks and Recreation and Fort Tuthill Master Plans.

The Deputy County Manager position will be an open, competitive process for both internal and external candidates. Sandbags are available for County Residents at Tiffany yard, on highway 89 in Timberline,past Summit Fire Station. For City residents, sandbags are available at 500 N Aztec St in Flagstaff. You may not experience flooding but the ground is saturated.

Coconino County on both a state and national level, has always "punched above its weight." This year at the National Association of County Officials representing over 3000 counties, parishes, and boroughs across this country, Coconino County treasurer, Sarah Benatar tossed her hat into the national arena. With the help of all of Coconino County, and so many more, she received a first ballot victory for the 2nd VP position and placed her in line for the presidency of the National Association. She is the first Latina to have won this position. Once again, Treasurer Benatar has made Coconino County proud!

Speaking of "punching above our weight" and accepting national leadership positions to better serve our communities, the Coconino County Board of Supervisors finished their time at the National Association of Counties convention in New Orleans, not only with electing Treasurer Sarah Benatar as 2nd VP (!) and also with the appointment of Lena Fowler as VP for Rural Counties Steering Committee and Supervisor Patrice Horstman as VP for both Public Lands and Resilient Counties steering committees. Additionally, Supervisors Vasquez, Ontiveros, and Begay continue their advocacy on their respective national committees.

Forest Restoration works has commenced on Observatory Mesa at Lowell Observatory. To allow for hikers and dog walkers, the crew will attempt to close the trails in segments as needed for their work. If the closure signs aren't honored, safety may require closing the whole area. Ziggy is asking us all to respect the closures and stay off the closed trails. With deepest gratitude and respect we honor Nick.

Coconino County will join the State of Arizona in lowering flags to half-staff on Saturday, July 11 to honor 27-year-old Firefighter Nick Hutcherson of Glendale, who perished last month battling the Knowles Fire in Colorado.

Hutcherson was a member of the wildland fire team assigned through the Kaibab National Forest and was an active citizen in his personal life in Coconino County. The County extends thoughts of sympathy to the family of Firefighter Hutcherson and gratitude for the work and sacrifice our wildland firefighters make in defense of our communities.

This morning Supervisor Tammy Ontiveros and I met with the incident management team and fire crew that have been fighting the Pocket Fire and extended our deepest appreciation on behalf of Coconino County for their dedication, service and commitment to saving our communities. We presented them with the Coconino County 135th anniversary challenge coin to commemorate their awesome work. A huge thank you too our wildland firefighters and first responders.
