Want to become a firefighter? This could be your opportunity.

For the first time, the Greater Flagstaff Region will be hosting a Green Academy, creating a pathway for qualified candidates to enter the fire service without already holding Firefighter I & II certifications.

Applications open September 21, 2026, and candidates with or without current Firefighter I/II certification are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must meet the minimum requirements, including holding a current Arizona and/or National Registry EMT or CEP certification within the required timeframe. This hiring cycle will not include a separate lateral process.

The Greater Flagstaff Region hiring process represents Flagstaff Fire Department, Highlands Fire District, Pinewood Fire District, Summit Fire & Medical District, and Flagstaff Airport Fire.

Applications open September 21 and close November 15, 2026.

This afternoon, Summit Fire & Medical District, alongside the Flagstaff Fire Department HazMat Team, responded to a report of a possible hazardous materials incident on Highway 89.

Crews conducted a thorough investigation of the scene and determined there was no hazardous materials threat and no danger to the surrounding area or the public.

We appreciate the coordinated response and partnership of all agencies involved in ensuring the safety of our community.

If you see smoke in Summit Fire and Medicals district don’t be alarmed this is why…

CAMP NAVAJO, Ariz.– The Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs continues to manage the lightning-caused Americana fire, which began August 11.

Currently spanning 110 acres, the fire is being managed internally by Camp Navajo Fire and Forestry crews alongside military firefighters from the Arizona National Guard. Because this portion of Camp Navajo has not experienced fire activity in approximately 75 years, managing this burn provides a critical opportunity to clear significant amounts of dead and down vegetation. Officials intend to utilize the fire to naturally treat up to 200 acres of underbrush to reduce future wildfire risks.

The fire is fully contained within the Camp Navajo road system and poses no threat to military or civilian infrastructure, personnel, or surrounding communities.

Members rotated through a series of functional workout stations designed to challenge their strength, endurance, teamwork, and determination.

Each station is another step in preparing these future firefighters for the physical and mental demands of a career in the fire service.

Congratulations to our newest Summit Fire & Medical paramedics!

Engineer Riggs, Firefighter Harrison, and Firefighter Hodges have successfully completed paramedic school and are now certified paramedics.

A special congratulations to Firefighter Hodges for earning Top Student honors in the class.

Today, Summit Fire & Medical District had the privilege of working alongside our regional partners at Flagstaff Fire Department, Coconino County SAR Search and Rescue, and Guardian Air Transport during the successful rescue of a critically injured mountain biker.

This complex, multi-agency operation required teamwork, coordination, and determination as crews provided lifesaving medical care before navigating steep, rugged, and hazardous terrain to safely move the patient to a landing zone, where Guardian Air transported them to definitive care.

Incidents like this highlight the strength of our partnerships and the dedication of everyone involved. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community alongside such outstanding agencies, and we wish the patient a full and speedy recovery.

🚒🌲 Summit Fire Takes on the Bench Fire 🌲🚒
Our Type 3 Engine has been assigned to fire attack on the Bench Fire in Jefferson County, Oregon. Our crew is working alongside firefighters from across the region to help protect lives, property, and natural resources.
We’re proud to answer the call when neighboring communities need assistance. Please keep all firefighters and first responders working on the Bench Fire in your thoughts as they continue this challenging mission.

🚒 Vehicle Fire Sparks 1-Acre Wildfire
What started as a vehicle fire quickly spread into the surrounding grass and brush, igniting approximately one acre of vegetation.
With rapid response of Summit Fire & Medical crews, USFS firefighters were able to quickly stop the forward progress of the fire and keep it from growing into a larger wild land fire.

Today, Summit Fire & Medical Department deployed a Type 3 Wildland Engine and crew to Oregon to assist with wildfire prepositioning efforts.
Prepositioning is the strategic placement of firefighters, engines, and hand crews in areas at elevated risk before extreme weather or dangerous fire conditions occur. By staging resources ahead of time, emergency responders can react more quickly to new fires, helping protect lives, property, and natural resources.
We are proud to support our neighbors through this proactive approach to wildfire response. Our crew is ready to answer the call wherever they’re needed, and we wish them a safe deployment.

🔥 Fire Restrictions Have Been Lifted

In coordination with the County and the U.S. Forest Service, fire restrictions have been lifted effective 6:00 a.m. this morning.

While restrictions have been lifted, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant. Fire danger still exists, and a single spark can quickly become a wildfire.

If you plan to burn, please do so responsibly and follow all open burning requirements established by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (AZDEQ).

Thank you for doing your part to help keep our communities and public lands safe.

After consultation with state and federal land management partners, areas of Coconino County within the boundaries of the Kaibab and Coconino National Forest have been lifted as Monday, July 20, 2026, at 6 a.m. This decision, according to Coconino County’s Wildfire Defense Ordinance, applies to all private property within, and adjacent to, the boundaries of the Kaibab and Coconino National Forests.

At this time, there are no active fire restrictions in Coconino County. The public is reminded to always be extra cautious when recreating on public lands, regardless of restrictions.

Fire restrictions are implemented to help prevent human-caused fires and to limit the exposure of visitors during periods of potentially dangerous fire conditions. Decisions about fire restrictions are a collaborative effort with area land management entities and are based on a combination of carefully measured factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and predicted weather, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, enduring drought and available firefighting resources.
