🔥 Happy Labor Day weekend from your Highlands Firefighters! 🚒

We hope you and your loved ones enjoy a safe, relaxing, and well-deserved break this holiday weekend.

Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday in September, honors the hard work and achievements of American workers. It began with a parade organized by labor unions in New York City in 1882 and became a federal holiday in 1894.

From all of us at Highlands Fire District — thank you for everything you do. Stay safe out there, and have a wonderful Labor Day! 🇺🇸🛠️❤️

🔥🚒🥾 Boots out through the holiday weekend! 💪❤️

Highlands Fire District crews are in the district all weekend long for our annual Fill the Boot campaign supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)! 🙌💙

This proud firefighter tradition started back in 1952, when families affected by muscular dystrophy reached out to Boston firefighters for help. 🚒 The crews grabbed their boots, hit the streets, and raised thousands in that first effort. By 1954, the International Association of Fire Fighters officially made MDA their charity of choice — and more than 70 years later, firefighters across the country (including us!) are still filling boots to fund research, care, and hope for families living with neuromuscular diseases. 💪🧬✨

Every dollar helps push toward better treatments and stronger futures. 💵➡️💙

Wave, smile, and drop a donation if you can — our boots are open and ready all weekend! 👋😊❤️🥾

Thank you, Highlands, for always having our backs. 🙏 Together we fight fires and fight for a cure. 🔥❤️

🌲🐶 Firewise work + puppy cuddles = perfect day for the Highlands Fire District crew! 🚒🔥🐾

Our off-duty firefighters heard that our friends at High Country Humane | Flagstaff, AZ needed a hand with some important FIREWISE work on their property… and let’s be honest… the promise of puppy time sealed the deal! 🐶💕🐾

So a bunch of us grabbed our gear, rolled up our sleeves, and got after some much-needed volunteer tree work to help keep their campus safer. Nothing beats serving the community and getting to hang with the cutest little faces around! 🪓🌲❤️

Huge thank you to Clay Ahrendt for jumping in and lending their expertise — you made the day smoother and safer! 🙌🌳
And an even bigger shout-out to the amazing staff at the facility for the warm welcome, the hard work you do every day, and for sharing those precious puppy cuddles with us! 🥰🐕

Thinking about adding a furry family member? Here’s how easy it is to adopt from High Country Humane:

1️⃣ Browse – Check out all the adoptable pets (dogs, cats, and more) right on their website: [highcountryhumane.org/adopt-a-pet](https://highcountryhumane.org/adopt-a-pet/). Look at photos, ages, personalities, and make a mental note of who you’d love to meet!

2️⃣ Meet & Greet – No appointment needed! Just stop by during open hours: Thursday–Tuesday, 11 AM – 5 PM (closed Wednesdays). Have a few pets in mind when you arrive — they don’t do kennel walk-throughs, but their team will happily set up meet-and-greets. Already have a dog? Bring them along so everyone can say hello first!

3️⃣ Complete the Adoption – Once you’ve found your perfect match, sign the adoption agreement and pay the adoption fee (it helps cover surgeries, vaccines, and care). Then take your new best friend home! 🏠❤️

🔥 Hands-on training day!

Highlands Fire District members joined the .community.college Fire Science Program for an awesome session. 🚒

CCC recently acquired this powerful training prop to teach firefighter students and regional partners. The Max Fire Box lets crews safely see real fire & smoke behavior, thermal layering, flow paths, and more — all in a controlled “Burn & Learn” environment. 👀🌡️

Huge thanks to Mark Cannon from Max Fire Box for the outstanding instruction! 👏🙏

Proud to train together and support the next generation of firefighters. Stay safe! 💪

🌲🔥Americana Fire – Camp Navajo🔥🌲

We’ve heard from residents noticing smoke in the area. The smoke is coming from the lightning-caused Americana Fire at Camp Navajo (started August 11).

Current Status (as of latest official updates):
• ~95–110 acres
• Managed by Camp Navajo Fire & Forestry crews with Arizona National Guard support
• Being used as a beneficial/resource fire in an area that hasn’t seen fire in ~75 years — treating up to 200 acres of underbrush and reducing future wildfire risk
• Fully contained within the Camp Navajo road system

No threat to Highlands Fire District communities (Kachina Village, Mountainaire, Forest Highlands, Pine Del, Lower Lake Mary), infrastructure, personnel, or surrounding areas.

This is proactive forest management that helps keep our ponderosa pine country safer long-term.

We’re monitoring the situation closely with our regional partners and will share any changes.

Good things are worth the wait! 🙌

Our second electronic message board is now officially up and running by Kachina Village! Along with the sign near Mountainaire, this new sign will help Highlands Fire District keep residents informed about fire restrictions, emergency information, community notices, and other important updates.

We’re excited to have another tool to help us stay connected with our community. Be sure to watch for messages as you pass by!
