There is a City Council Meeting today at 6pm.
Please consider attending to support "Friends of the Rio de Flag" (or just to learn more about the issue and importance), it would help immeasurably to get our voices heard.
Flagstaff is about to spend several million dollars to bury our Rio de Flag in concrete boxes underground. In addition to the financial burden, it will take years of disruptive construction efforts, including re-routing the railroad tracks. The cost-benefit analysis is so low that the currently-involved contractors may not even be willing to take on the project. And, of course, we would all lose our beautiful Rio (permanently!) - which is probably especially meaningful to you if you live near one of the many spots that has a beautiful flow up to 6 weeks out of the year - like the area right below the labyrinth!
Friends of the Rio has other solutions that will be just as effective at controlling flooding, could better serve the residents in current flood areas, and will keep and even enhance the presence and aesthetics of the Rio in Flagstaff. These fixes won't require moving of the railroad tracks, and are likely to cost much less than the current solution. At tonight's meeting, we are asking the council to please reconsider their next steps and at least perform a financial assessment of what the Friends of the Rio are proposing.
If you care and want to come, we need you. The council needs to know that we believe the Rio is an educational, beautiful, recreational asset in our city.
