The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office solemnly honor the heroes who fought for freedom on D‑Day. Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the largest naval, air, and land operation in history, when Allied Forces stormed German‑occupied France. On that day, 4,415 service members made the ultimate sacrifice. We extend our deepest gratitude to the thousands who bravely defended freedom.

The Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of fraudulent telephone calls in which scammers impersonate Sheriff’s Office personnel and falsely claim that the recipient has missed federal grand jury duty. Callers then demand payment to avoid arrest. In one case, a resident was told the fine was $35,000 but could be “reduced” to $3,500 if paid immediately. The caller instructed the resident to withdraw cash, purchase gift cards at Walmart, and provide the card information as payment. Thanks to alert Walmart staff, the resident was advised the call was a scam and subsequently reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office.

Residents are reminded that legitimate law enforcement agencies never request payment, personal information, gift cards, or account access over the phone. If you receive such a message, delete it immediately. Do not respond, click links, or scan QR codes. These communications are fraudulent.

Any suspected scam attempts should be reported to your local police department.

National Police Week begins today. The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office honor the dedicated men and women of law enforcement who risk their lives each day to protect our communities. We also solemnly remember those officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Established in 1962 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the surrounding week as Police Week, this annual observance provides a meaningful opportunity to recognize fallen officers and express gratitude to those who continue to serve.

In 2026, 403 officers will be added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This includes 175 officers who died in the line of duty in 2025, along with 228 officers from previous years whose sacrifices were recently documented and verified.

All 403 names will be formally dedicated during the 38th Annual Candlelight Vigil on the National Mall at 8:00 p.m. EDT on May 13, 2026. Additional information is available through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
