🚨 NEW APPARATUS ANNOUNCEMENT (for real this time)🚨

The Raritan Township Fire Company is excited to officially announce the purchase of our newest piece of apparatus — a Pierce Enforcer 107' Heavy-Duty Ladder!

The new Quint 21 will replace our 2004 Seagrave, which has faithfully served Raritan Township and our members for more than two decades. After countless calls, training evolutions, community events, and years of service, the Seagrave is reaching the end of its frontline service life. While it still has some work ahead of it before retirement, its replacement will ensure our firefighters have a modern, reliable apparatus capable of meeting the needs of our community for decades to come.

The new Pierce Enforcer 107' HD Ladder will provide our members with expanded capabilities for both fire suppression and truck company operations.

As Raritan Township continues to grow, new residential and commercial construction is changing the landscape of the community we protect. As our town grows, so do the challenges and demands placed upon our fire company. This new apparatus will provide our firefighters with the reach, equipment, reliability, and capabilities necessary to safely and effectively respond to those changing needs — not only today, but for many years to come.

With the extended lead times currently associated with the construction of new fire apparatus, the RTFC was also able to take advantage of the Pierce Stock Truck Program. This allowed us to secure an apparatus already scheduled within Pierce's production process and significantly reduce the amount of time we would otherwise have to wait for a completely custom-built truck. Our apparatus committee worked to ensure the stock specification could be adapted to meet the operational needs of Raritan Township while allowing us to get the new Quint 21 into service sooner.

The purchase of a new fire apparatus is no small undertaking. Countless hours went into researching, planning, reviewing specifications, and making sure this apparatus will serve our members and our community for many years to come.

We would especially like to thank the Raritan Township Committee for their continued support of the Raritan Township Fire Company and for making this important investment in the safety of our residents, our firefighters, and our community possible.

We would also like to recognize and thank the members of our apparatus committee for the countless hours they dedicated to this project, along with Fire & Safety Services, Ltd., Pierce Mfg, and salesman Eric Trevena for working with us throughout the process.

Now comes the hard part...

A Few RTFC Updates!

Over the past two weeks, RTFC has responded to 38 calls for service, including multiple fire alarm and CO activations, vehicle fires, brush fires, and smoke/odor investigations.

For everyone who asks us: Yes, sometimes we really do get cats out of trees! On Saturday 8/15, crews responded to assist with a cat that was stuck in a tree. Thankfully, the cat did not appear to be injured. With assistance from Flemington-Raritan Rescue, crews were able to safely get the cat back to the ground.

Later that evening, some of our members got together to staff Squad 21 along with a crew dinner, followed by some training!

On Monday, 8/17, RTFC crews conducted a walkthrough of the new Restaurant Depot warehouse on U.S. Highway 202. This extremely large facility features multiple dry-storage and refrigerated areas. While we always hope we never have to respond to an emergency there, the walkthrough gave our crews an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the building and discuss response options should an incident occur.

On Wednesday 8/20, RTFC participated in the 4-H Fair for the second year. Our crews assisted with parking, helping ensure that visitors could enter the fairgrounds quickly and safely. We estimate that approximately 6,500 vehicles came through the fair that day! Our volunteers spent hours outside helping direct traffic and keep things moving. Events like the 4-H Fair are also an important opportunity for us to connect with the community while raising funds that help support the department's operations.

14th Annual RTFC 9/11 Stair Climb is coming! Join us Sunday September 27th at Hunterdon Medical Center!

Raritan Township Fire Company, in partnership with Hunterdon Health, invites you to join us in honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001.

The challenge is to climb the equivalent number of stairs FDNY firefighters climbed in the World Trade Center before the collapse. This is not a race. It is highly suggested that you be physically prepared, as we begin the climb in full turnout gear. The climb takes approximately 1.5 hours. Drinks and light snacks will be provided during the climb, and lunch will be served afterward.

This event is open to all first responders and the general public. Spectators welcome as well! We will also have the Rolling Memorial on site; FDNY Rescue 5. There will be challenge coins for the first few hundred signups, and there is a maximum of 343 participants. Registration must be completed online before the event.

Today's storms kept members busy responding to several lightning-related incidents throughout the township.

The first incident we were dispatched to occurred when lightning struck a tree before traveling into a nearby natural gas line, igniting a fire. Due to the incident occurring in a non-hydranted area, tankers from the Quakertown Fire Company were requested to the scene to ensure an adequate water supply until Elizabethtown Gas secured the damaged gas line.

Later, another lightning strike hit a local golf course clubhouse, blowing a hole through the roof and damaging electrical equipment inside the building.

These incidents are a good reminder that lightning can do far more than simply knock out power. In a fraction of a second, it can cause significant damage to homes, businesses, utilities, and even ignite fires.

If you hear thunder, you're close enough to be struck. When storms roll through, head indoors and remain there until at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in either incident.

Stay weather aware, stay safe, and remember—Mother Nature always has a way of keeping us on our toes.

Over the next day or two, you may notice hazy skies or the smell of smoke throughout our area. This is due to smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires being carried into our region by the upper-level winds.

While the smoke may be noticeable at times, there is no cause for alarm. Depending on conditions, it may reduce visibility and temporarily impact air quality, especially for those with asthma, COPD, or other respiratory conditions.

If you're sensitive to smoke: • Limit prolonged outdoor activity if the air quality worsens. • Keep windows closed if smoke becomes heavy. • Monitor local air quality conditions before spending extended time outdoors.

The Raritan Township Fire Company will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates if needed. As always, if you see active flames or a localized smoke column, don't assume it's related to the wildfire smoke—call 9-1-1 so it can be investigated.

Earlier this afternoon, the Raritan Township Fire Company was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire at the intersection of Route 202 and Commerce Street.

Upon arrival, crews were met with a well-involved vehicle fire. The fire was quickly knocked down while additional efforts were made to contain fluid runoff from the vehicle.

Traffic was controlled by members of our Fire Police and the Raritan Township Police Department. The Hunterdon County HazMat Team as well at the Raritan Township Fire Marshals also responded to assist at the scene.

A huge congrats to some new firefighter neighbors at Flemington Fire!

At the end of April, the Flemington Fire Department had 4 candidates successfully complete the Spring Firefighter 1 program at the Hunterdon County Emergency Services Training Center (HCESTC). While working around their very different 9-5 careers, Nate Bensinger, Lina DiCairano, Gabino Careaga, & Osmin Lainez attended 240 hours of this hands on, college level course. We are very proud and grateful for their dedication. Congratulations to you all!👨🏻‍🚒
