Sometimes making a difference doesn’t mean doing something huge. Sometimes it looks like a roll of toilet paper... bottle of hand soap... box of tissues.

At our Promise Transitional House, the little things matter... especially when a large family is sharing one home. We’re asking our community to help us stock some everyday essentials that keep the household running smoothly:

🤧 Tissues
🗑️ Garbage bags
🧹 One mop & bucket
🧴 Liquid hand soap
🧺 Laundry detergent

🚗 BE HONEST… HOW DEPENDENT ARE YOU ON YOUR CAR? Think about your typical day in Hunterdon County.

Work.
School.
Childcare.
The grocery store.
The doctor.
A friend's house.
An appointment.
A trip across the county.

Now imagine doing all of it without a reliable car. According to Census data, the average Hunterdon County worker's commute is about 33 minutes each way. And roughly 83.5% of workers get to work by car, truck or van.

For most of us, that's just life in Hunterdon. But what happens when the car isn't there? 💬 We want to hear from you: What is ONE thing in your life that would become difficult - or impossible - if you suddenly didn't have access to a car?

🏃‍♂️💙🏃‍♂️💙A champion on the track... a champion for his community. Kasey Kinsley, the 2025–26 Gatorade New Jersey Boys Track & Field Player of the Year, has chosen Family Promise of Hunterdon County, Inc. as the recipient of his $1,000 Gatorade Player of the Year Community Grant... 🏃‍♂️💙🏃‍♂️💙and we think that choice is worth celebrating!

Kasey has already accomplished something extraordinary on the track. But the Gatorade Player of the Year Community Grant offers honorees another opportunity -> -> to use their recognition to give something back to their own community. Gatorade created the program to help athletes “pay it forward” and support organizations working to create opportunity for the next generation.

For Family Promise of Hunterdon County, Inc., what makes this so meaningful was that we were chosen. Our gratitude runs deep. A young athlete from our own community, someone who has worked incredibly hard to reach the highest level of high school track and field in New Jersey, was given the opportunity to make a difference, and he chose an organization helping local families facing housing instability.

That is the kind of community we want to be!!! One where success isn't just about how far you can go, but about remembering your community and finding a way to help someone else move forward, too.

No car. No backup vehicle. No friend who can drop everything to drive you. Could you make it work?

Now imagine that transportation challenge isn't temporary. Imagine it's your everyday reality. That's when transportation stops being a convenience issue... and starts becoming a stability issue.

That's approximately how long the average Hunterdon County worker spends commuting each way. So here's something to think about:

What if you couldn't drive those 33 minutes?

Would your job still be accessible?

Would your children's school still be accessible?

Would your doctor still be accessible?

Would an affordable apartment still be a realistic option?

Would the job you were offered still be worth taking?

Transportation can quietly determine what parts of our community are actually within reach. And that's something we wanted to explore more deeply. We just published a new, extensively researched story about the connection between transportation + employment + healthcare + poverty + housing stability in Hunterdon County.

🚌 “BUT THERE IS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN HUNTERDON COUNTY.”

Yes... there is... and that's important. Hunterdon has transportation resources, including LINK, demand-response services and specialized programs designed to help residents reach essential destinations.

So this isn't a story about saying “there is no transportation.” It's a more complicated question:

Is the transportation that exists accessible for EVERYONE who needs it?

What if your shift starts before the bus runs?

What if you work evenings?

What if your job is outside the county?

What if you have two children and three places to be?

What if you need to make multiple stops?

What if your appointment doesn't fit the schedule?

What if your ride falls through?

What if you're offered a job... but you can't reliably get there?
