According to several Censuses, he was born in Alabama. He was one of at least 8 children born to Pitman Flynt and Nancy Malloy Flynt and he served with the 33rd Regiment of the Arkansas Infantry during the Civil War. He married Melvina Oglesby on February 15, 1855, in Arkansas. Depending on the Census, he is listed as a carpenter (1870), a farmer (1860, 1880), or a store keeper (1900).
He is the namesake and founder of Flint Texas. After moving to the area in the late 1870's, the family sold land to the Kansas and Gulf Short Line Railroad in December 1882, which at the time was laying out plans for a railroad. When the railroad came through in 1884, the town began to take shape, and in 1887, R. P. Flynt applied for a Post Office, however the application was misread, and the name of Flint was issued for the post office. Robert served as the initial postmaster, and also had a lumberyard and a store in the community.
There appears to have been a close bond between the Flynt and Oglesby families. They lived in close proximity in Arkansas and it seems that at least one other sibling from both families married each other, as a death certificate (Nannie T. Oglesby Reynolds) indicates that Porter Oglesby, one of Melvina's older brothers, married Laura (or Laurie) Flynt Oglesby, who was one of Robert's younger sisters. Also, siblings from each family accompanied or at least followed Robert and Melvina to the Smith County area. As mentioned above, Robert's sister, Mary (or Nancy) L(ouisa) Flynt Cates Blackwell is buried in the Rather Cemetery with her second husband, R. G. Blackwell, Sr.. as well as Melvina's oldest brother, James Oglesby, who is buried with his wife, Margaret E. Bridges Broyles Oglesby in the Rather Cemetery, along with numerous Oglesby children. A more detailed history of their families and their roles in establishing the town can be found in the book, "Bullard, Its History And People, Vol. 1".
Flynt the Fire Dog's name was taken from this spelling.
