An intake specialist will upload your documents for tax preparation by certified IRS tax preparers (no face to face tax preparation). If you have earned income under $57,000, this site is for you. Did you know: If you receive the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Congress has approved a new ‘lookback rule’ which means you can use either your 2019 or 2020 income on your taxes and get the largest refund possible this year. To be eligible to earn the Earned Income Tax Credit, earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must each be less than:

$46,997 ($52,427 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
$43,756 ($49,186 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children

The Genesee County Tax Coalition is providing free tax prep for low to moderate income Genesee County residents . The Coalition, in cooperation with the IRS, will have 6 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites available in the county through April 11, 2015 to help residents. The VITA sites help low and moderate income families file their 2014 income taxes and to benefit from the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC); all at no cost to the client.

For tax year 2011 our coalition recruited 71 volunteer tax preparers who staffed 8 free tax preparation sites in Flint. In 2011-2012, more than $600,000 in EITC refunds were returned to Genesee County taxpayers as a result of our local Tax Coalition’s work.

Volunteer Training Resources

Are you interested in becoming a Volunteer Tax Preparer? If you are interested in participating this tax season (and we hope you are!!), then here is the training and operating information.

Reminder: You must be certified by the IRS to participate. Certification occurs by passing (scoring 80% or better) the IRS Basic and Intermediate Level tests. You can take only the Basic Level test, but you will not be able to prepare “itemized” or more complicated tax returns. The tests are offered on-line as discussed below.

Training Opportunities:

I. Federal IRS Material – Must be certified on this material.

Fall Training Sessions – You can attend FREE tax training courses offered this fall on the following schedule:

• Christ Enrichment Center (CEC) – Beginning November 27th - December 20th – Tuesdays and Thursday 10:00AM to 1:00 PM for basic and intermediate preparers.

• Resource Genesee – Beginning November 27th - December 17th on Tuesdays from 6 – 8:30 PM for intermediate and advance preparers only.

Link & Learn – (Available in late November.) The study material and tests are presented online. For more information, click here: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Volunteer-Training-Resources. Hardcopy materials are also used with the Link & Learn program, and you get these materials from Resource Genesee or your site coordinator.

UMF Class – Class will meet Saturday mornings from 9:30am-12:10pm in the Riverfront Building beginning January 5, 2013. The class will cover federal, state, and city taxes. Contact Dr. Miller via e-mail at [email protected] for more information.

II. State of Michigan Material

State of Michigan Session – You can attend a one-day, FREE, training session presented by a State of Michigan treasury representative in January. The exact date and time will be announced in the near future and will be held at ELGA Credit Union's Administration Building located at 2305 S. Center in Burton.
