"Family homelessness exists all across the country. But it often goes unseen. It’s an invisible crisis.

More than 1.5 million children experienced homelessness during the 2023-24 school year. Yet most were not living on the streets or in shelters. They were staying in motels or doubled up with others, forms of homelessness that can remain largely invisible to the public.

These families and children experiencing homelessness deserve to be top of mind. Which is exactly why we work every day to serve families in our community.

This week, we’re going to celebrate our work here in Mid-Michigan and the work of Family Promise sites across the country.

💜 Even when the rain changes the plans, kindness keeps moving! 💜
A HUGE thank you to Janet Wilson and everyone Transfiguration Lutheran Church Fenton for making the 3rd Annual 5K Walk to Benefit Family Promise such a meaningful success! 🏃‍♀️💙
The walk was originally planned for Saturday, September 19, but Mother Nature had other plans! 🌧️ Thankfully, that didn’t stop the generosity of the TLC community. Donations continued through Sunday, and together, you raised an incredible $1,000 for Family Promise of Mid Michigan! 🎉
Janet and the entire TLC family, we are so incredibly grateful for your continued support of the families we serve. Your generosity helps families facing housing instability find the support, resources, and encouragement they need to move forward.

You probably passed a family experiencing homelessness today and had absolutely no idea.

🧒 Maybe their kids were sitting next to yours at school.
🛒 Maybe you stood behind them at the grocery store.
🚘 Maybe their parent was beside you in traffic, driving the car they’ll sleep in tonight.

Family homelessness often doesn’t look the way people expect it to.

In the Genesee and Lapeer County school districts more than 1,000 children have been identified as experiencing homelessness. And those are just the children attending school, younger siblings in those families aren't counted.

And at Family Promise, the families we meet are navigating all kinds of situations. Some need a safe place to sleep. Some are staying temporarily with friends or family. Some are one unexpected expense away from losing absolutely everything. Some have income and are ready to move forward - but need help overcoming the barriers standing between them and a home.

That’s why our work looks different for every family.

Sometimes it’s helping a parent find housing and get the keys directly in their hand.

Sometimes it’s financial assistance, transportation, advocacy, education, or simply having someone who knows the community make the right phone call at the right time.

And increasingly, it means looking at the gaps families keep encountering and asking: What would it take to actually solve this?

We meet short-term crises with long-term solutions - because children deserve more than somewhere to sleep tonight. They deserve the safety and stability of home.

And there is a LOT happening right now as our community works together to make that possible. We are so glad you’re here to be a part of that too. 💛

Housing instability hits a little more deeply when the school year starts - from needing new supplies, to starting new routines in an unstable housing situation - it's overwhelming. Family Promise of Mid Michigan helps infuse families with stabilization resources to help make that transition a little less overwhelming. More than 50 families helped so far this year alone!

We could not do it without your continued support!

The $100,000 investment will strengthen support for children and families experiencing housing instability.

We are deeply honored to have received a special donation from the Carole Tucker Trust. Carole Tucker played an integral role in launching Family Promise of Mid Michigan. She was among the first members of the Host Recruitment Committee and a dedicated volunteer through Flushing Presbyterian Church. Thank you to her sons for sharing their reflection. We hold her memory dear and look forward to Carole Tucker's legacy living on in service.
