UM-Flint Student Veterans Resource Center

UM-Flint Student Veterans Resource Center The SVRC at the University of Michigan-Flint is a space for student veterans to access resources, enjoy the company of other student veterans, hold meetings, and study.

Online meetings are available. Use the form at https://www.umflint.edu/svrc. Our philosophy is one of respect, appreciation, inclusiveness, and recognition that veterans have concerns and experiences that differ from those of typical college student. The Student Veterans Resource Center, located in 131 University Pavilion, provides services for service members and veterans, as well as their spouses and dependents. Our staff is available to assist with academic, financial, and transition support services, including information regarding use of VA Educational Benefits. We have a wide network both on and off campus for referrals to a wide variety of services and programs. In addition to our services, we also have a student veterans lounge. The lounge area is home to three computer stations and printer, and space to study and socialize while on campus. Services include: • Assistance with the admission application process • Review of military transfer credit recommendations • Information about using financial aid • Assistance using VA Educational Benefits or Tuition Assistance programs • Scholarship opportunities • Support to student veterans organizations and community involvement

Veterans Week 2020 | University of Michigan Veteran and Military Services Program

The University of Michigan Veterans Week activities are still taking place! Right now, we are discussing the documentary "The Weight of Honor" which features caregivers of military veterans. Very often, the spouse of a veteran is the primary caregiver. For information and the link to the discussion (which just started) is at https://vets.umich.edu/vetsweek/. You can download the documentary at no cost from the UM library using your UM login credentials.

At 2pm today, there is a discussion about VA healthcare and benefits. At 3pm, we will be discussing "DEI in the Military," and at 4:30pm, we'll talk about "Diversity in the Military."

On Friday at 12 noon, there will be a panel about "Women in the Military" and at 2pm, a discussion about "Sexual Harassment in the Military" (please see the overview on the above website before viewing).

The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is proud to host the 2020 Veterans Week celebration. This annual event features a week of educational programming that celebrates the experiences and sacrifice of those who have served our country.

Veterans Day

Good afternoon!

Wednesday, November 11, 2020 is officially Veterans Day. Due to COVID-19 gathering restrictions, we are unable to hold our regular annual ceremony on campus to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our country. However, we invite our students, faculty and staff who are veterans, currently serving in the U.S. military, or have a family member who is a veteran or service member to visit our webpage at https://www.umflint.edu/veteransday/ and complete a profile so that we may honor your service . We have partnered with the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Dearborn campuses and several partners to offer a full week of virtual panel discussions, events, and information sessions. Please visit the "Vets Week 2020" link within our page to view the full schedule of events. All events are free of charge and held virtually.

Again, thank you to all of our veterans and family members for your service and devotion to our country and her grateful citizens.

Among the leaders and best at the University of Michigan-Flint are our veterans and active military personnel. These individuals are our students, faculty, staff, and alumni, who have a shared experience of service to the United States of America through one of the branches of the armed services. Th...

Today we remember the terrorist attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 souls of all backgrounds, nationalities, colors and creeds in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We remember the innocent civilians who perished in the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. We remember the terrified passengers and crew members on the hijacked flights. We remember the heroic actions of the passengers and crew on United Flight 93 who thwarted an imminent second attack on Washington, D.C. We remember the courageous first responders who ran toward the devastation, fully aware that they were unlikely to survive. We remember those who have passed away as a result of terrible illnesses incurred at Ground Zero and at the Pentagon while searching for survivors and the ensuing recovery efforts. We remember the courage of ordinary civilians who helped coworkers and complete strangers escape the buildings before they collapsed to the ground. We remember the unity around the country as people came together to support one another. September 11, 2001, is a day that will live forever in history. And, for me, even now, it still feels like it just happened.

Nineteen years later, our first responders and our heroic service members in the Armed Forces continue to fight those who continue to terrorize innocent civilians around the world and at home. Our student veterans who have served in the War on Terror continue to serve in many ways in our communities to improve conditions for your fellow citizens and guests in our country. Our dependents and family members continue to support our students on active duty around the globe and on the homefront.

Today, we offer you our genuine and heartfelt gratitude for your service, bravery, and resilience. It is our turn to serve YOU at the University of Michigan-Flint. We do so with respect and honor.
We will never forget.
Thank you.

Today is Women Veterans Recognition Day. The Student Veterans Resource Center thanks and honors our women veterans and everything you continue to do for our country.

Today, Michigan honors its more than 43,000 women veterans. “I am so honored to help women veterans across the state celebrate our third Women Veterans Recognition Day here in Michigan,” said Zaneta Adams, MVAA Director and Army veteran. “Our hope is that the more we raise awareness, the better veteran-specific services will become for women veterans.” To mark the occasion, MVAA is releasing the first story in our She is A Veteran campaign, on retired Navy Master Chief Candy Robertson. https://bit.ly/3hl6DK2

Today, June 6, 2020, marks the 76th anniversary of the D-Day landings on the beaches of Normandy, France, and the beginning of the liberation of Europe from the vicious grip of tyranny.

Thank you to all of our heroes who served in the Allied forces to bring world-wide change and freedom to many of us. Some nations still do not enjoy the freedoms that we have in the US, Britain, Australia, Western Europe, and many other free countries.

We will never forget - must never forget - our heroes.
