Today, September 11, 2021, marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks on our country. Today, and every day, we remember the people whose lives ended so suddenly and the family members they left behind.

We remember and thank the first responders who selflessly gave their lives rescuing survivors and attempting to save others from the devastating ruins of the World Trade Center Towers and the Pentagon.

We remember the servicemembers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa, and those whom we have lost to su***de after returning home.

We thank our student veterans who have served our country with duty and honor.

Please continue to remember the service and sacrifices that have been made by so many since 9/11/2001.

Veterans Crisis Line: Su***de Prevention Hotline, Text & Chat

We are all reeling from the current situation in Afghanistan. As veterans, current service members, and family members, we know that these tragic events are particularly distressing.

If you are questioning the meaning of your service out there, or maybe wondering what it was all for, please know that you are not alone. Your service was NEVER in vain. We strongly encourage you to reach out to your friends, family members, and battle buddies, and connect with a peer-to-peer network. Two out of three of the staff members in the SVRC are civilians. However, we, and the campus community at large, support you and absolutely honor your service and sacrifice. Our colleague in the Student Veterans Resource Center, Drew Ornelas, has also served on multiple deployments, including Afghanistan. He will be back in the office next week and will be available to talk with you.

The University of Michigan-Flint provides confidential counseling and support services. If you wish, contact one of us at the Student Veterans Resource Center and we will get you connected, or contact their office directly at (810) 762-3456. Again, I will stress that their services are completely confidential, as are ours, and absolutely nothing will be shared with our office if you use their services.

Below, I have provided some resources to help you with the feelings that you may have in reaction to current events. I will also post information on the SVRC page.

Again, PLEASE reach out so that we can connect you with campus and community resources. We are here to support and assist you.

Are you ready for the Fall semester? We sure are looking forward to getting back to a somewhat "new normal" schedule and seeing our students walking around campus! Watch for announcements regarding office hours, etc. We'll still be conducting appointments virtually, BUT we'll be on campus starting next week! While staff will be alternating the days that we are physically on campus, we are planning to be there.

There will be access limitations to the SVRC to effectively make the space safe for everyone, and the lounge will not be accessible via card swipe yet. Masks will be required regardless of vaccination status. We have to limit capacity in the lounge to accommodate social distancing and allow for sanitization of the workspaces. Please notify us in advance if you need to access the SVRC and we'll make those arrangements.

We ask for your patience as we work through this transition.

Thank you!
