August 7 marks Purple Heart Day - a day when all Americans are encouraged to pause and honor the brave Soldiers who were wounded on the battlefield or paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. The Purple Heart was created on August 7, 1782 by General George Washington. Then called the Badge of Military Merit, the award was designed as a "figure of a heart in purple cloth, or silk, edged with narrow lace or binding," to be worn over the left breast. It is the oldest military honor still bestowed upon service members today. Although an accurate tally does not exist, National Geographic estimates that nearly 1.9 million service members have been honored with the Purple Heart. The award's design conveys a great deal of meaning - the face on the medal is that of its creator, Washington. The red and white symbol above the face represents the flag of our Nation's capitol, based on the design of Washington's own family coat of arms. The heart shaped medal is an homage to the heart and courage displayed by its wearer on behalf of their Nation. |

John F. Kennedy is the only U.S. President to be awarded a Purple Heart?
