Greetings from the MCC Title IX Office,

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a federal regulation that protects students from gender discrimination in educational programs or activities at colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance. To ensure that colleges and universities are following Title IX, the US Department of Education issued a letter that provides guidance on supporting pregnant and parenting students staying in school and completing their education.

Mott Community College is committed to making proactive and good faith efforts to follow the requirements of Title IX and implement the letter’s guidelines. Mott Community College will provide adjustments and/or support to any student who has medical documentation from a physician stating that she is pregnant, facing a pregnancy-related medical issue, or recovering from childbirth.

With medical documentation, the adjustments and/or support may include providing a larger classroom desk or a designated lactation room, allowing frequent trips to the restroom, permitting temporary access to elevators, providing opportunities for making up missed work, allowing the student to submit work after a missed deadline due to absences related to pregnancy or childbirth, or providing a leave of absence for a period of time. If adjustments and/or support is necessary, colleges and universities are expected to follow the same policies as other temporary medical conditions with any special services provided.

For questions or concerns about Title IX or other non-discrimination related compliance matters, contact the Title IX office at [email protected]

More specific information from the U.S. Department of Education regarding supporting the academic success of pregnant and parenting students is available at this link: http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/docs/pregnancy.html .

More information and materials regarding Title IX’s prohibition against discrimination based on pregnancy and related conditions are available on the National Women’s Law Center website at: https://nwlc.org/issue/pregnant-parenting-students/

Thank you for your attention to this important information.

For young parents, parenthood isn’t the end of the road. It’s essential that pregnant and parenting students not only have equal access to education, but also receive support to help them succeed in school.

Congratulations go to members Katie Kiacz and Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez, and faculty member Carrie Devone as they have been chosen and accepted into this years AAWCC LEADERS Institute. The LEADERS Experience

The national board for the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) supports the advancement of community college women into leadership positions. The LEADERS Institute is a five-day, content-intensive, experiential workshop, based on the AACC Core Competencies for Community College Leaders. In AAWCC, we believe that we lead from where we are, and the LEADERS Institute promotes the development of women’s leadership skills and qualities at every level in community college education and administration. The Institute is designed to prepare women leaders for career opportunities, career advancement, and executive-level leadership positions, including the presidency.

Graduates of the LEADERS Institute are recognized for their excellence in collaboration, encouragement and support for each other, their appreciation that many styles of leadership co-exist, and continuing expansion of their professional talents based on a strong personal foundation.

Over the course of 38 years of successes, LEADERS Institute has established a coalition of more than 6,000 women leaders.

Is retirement a viable option, or do you hold off until you reach Social Security age and when you get there will that change? We have long experienced a wage gap and as the last of the boomers struggle to balance retirement and security for their future we also face ageism in the workplace and when seeking employment. Planning now for the future means getting the right advice, empowering your decision with knowledge, and holding off longer to build a viable income stream in retirement. Ideally, you have multiple forms of income...right now most employers no longer offer pensions and few offer retirement healthcare. So what's your plan, how are you saving for your future?

Companies may say they want to hire older workers, but they’re not doing much to retain them.

More than 30 guests attended the AAWCC Day of Dialogue that featured some dynamic content related to Climate Change and how women are adversely affected, or more impacted by climate change than men. We also had some time to digest the information and talk about ways that we can mitigate and help support each other through the many crisis or challenges and opportunities we face. Special thanks to Dr. Beverly Walker-Griffea for giving the welcome, and to Angela Beaugard for moderating the event. It couldn't have been possible with out the intense work put into planning by Daphne Epps and Denica Townsel, Co-Chairs of the Professional Development committee and their team who took charge of coordinating this event. We also need to give a shout out to Dale Dale Kenneth Weighill, Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement, an AAWCC member, for his support of the event and providing prizes. Thank you all for this uplifting and spirited event in support of women.

We had a whirlwind of activity this week from hosting the all Employee meeting and Spotlighting a handful of MCC women who are leading where they are, through crisis, leaving a legacy, with passion, compassion and with great vision. We engaged in networking through an equal pay day event with dynamic women sharing their stories in salary negotiation, and had a rousing experience with the Day of Dialogue on climate change and women supporting women, then we coalesced around the themes of taking stock of your worth, energy and more at the MCC AAWCC Affinity groups after hours event "Walk in her Shoes."

I am so impressed with the women of MCC and our community partners at the Literacy Network and for the MI-ACE network and our community partners...and our men who supported our efforts. A huge thank you to all. I hope you will share snippets of your programs with us here.

In the meantime...Katie Kiacz has given us a call to action to support equal pay for women.
