Almost 20 years ago, the Durant Hotel was empty and falling apart. In 2005, the Land Bank took action to save this historic building and give it a new purpose.

Built in 1919 and opened in 1920, the Durant was once Flint's top hotel, hosting important guests and events.
But it closed in 1973 and sat unused for decades.

In 2008, our dedicated team began a $30 million renovation to transform the historic hotel into a mixed-use development. By 2010, the Durant reopened, offering 93 modern apartments and commercial spaces, seamlessly blending its historic charm with modern amenities.

Today, the Durant is a proud part of Flint's comeback, showing how preserving our history can lead to new opportunities.

Check out these photos to see its amazing transformation.

We’ve been hard at work in the Corunna Rd Corridor removing long-standing dangerous and blighted structures and making room for future use!
This transformation is underway thanks to many partners including State Land Bank Authority, City of Flint, United States Environmental Protection Agency. Contractors recently removed several blighted residential structures in the area, but there is more to come! The recent demolitions we completed with funding from Land Bank, US EPA, City of Flint CDBG, Michigan Land Bank, and Community Project Funding advocated for through Dan Kildee’s office.
Additional demolitions are in process with a June-October 2025 schedule.

With heavy hearts, the Genesee County Land Bank team is sharing the sad news of Raynetta Speed’s passing on Thursday night.

Raynetta was more than a colleague to us — she was a friend and an inspiration. Her warmth, dedication, and tireless spirit touched many lives, and her loss will be deeply felt.

From the very beginning, Raynetta believed in the mission of the Land Bank. As a County Commissioner, she was a strong advocate, supporting the Land Bank’s formation and serving on its first board of directors. In her role as Community Relations Manager, she became the bridge between the Land Bank and the community, leading our Clean & Green program and ensuring that community voices were heard and respected.

Raynetta's dedication to Flint was unmatched. She served on numerous boards, tirelessly working to revitalize and uplift the community she loved so deeply. Her passion for her work, her fierce advocacy for the community, and her genuine care for the people she served will forever be remembered.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Raynetta will be greatly missed, but her legacy of love and service will live on through our collective work with the community.

Her obituary information can be found here: https://www.lawrenceemoonfuneralhome.com/obituaries/Raynetta-Speed/ #!/TributeWall

Home Transformation in Progress!

We love seeing people putting in the work to bring a Flint home back to life! These in progress photos of a house we recently sold, show what's possible with dedication, helping the city thrive one house at a time.

This is exactly the kind of positive change we aim to support and encourage across the city. Each rehab project like this helps to build a stronger Flint.

Take a look at their renovation progress!

Before and After: 438 D’Elia Street!

What once stood as the crumbling remains of a home on D’Elia Street, overtaken by overgrown brush and a deteriorating structure, has now transformed into a clean, open space. The photos capture the remarkable difference after the demolition of this structure.

Demolition projects like this are essential for creating safer, more vibrant communities. Each dilapidated structure removed is a step toward reducing blight and restoring the neighborhood’s potential.

Before and After: 2328 and 2322 Kellar Street!

What once stood as deteriorating remains of homes on Kellar Street, burdened with overgrown brush and crumbling foundations, has now made way for well-kept green space. The photos above show the drastic before-and-after differences following the demolition of these structures.

At 2328 Kellar, a site that was long overtaken by debris, you can now see the fresh, open lot—ready for new possibilities. The same goes for 2322 Kellar, where the property, once unkempt and unsafe, now blends into the neighborhood as a clean, well-maintained space.

Demolition projects like these are crucial for creating safer and more vibrant neighborhoods. Every structure removed is another step toward restoring the community and reducing blight.

The Flint Public Art Project (FPAP) continues to bring new and inspiring murals to our community, transforming vacant spaces into vibrant showcases of art and culture. Each piece is unique, breathing new life into buildings and celebrating public service while enhancing the beauty of our neighborhoods. We're proud to support the arts in Flint and love seeing how these projects create lasting impact.

While not every blighted building can be demolished due to funding limitations, FPAP finds creative ways to reimagine and beautify them. Their collaborations with residents, organizations, and artists from around the world have resulted in hundreds of stunning murals throughout the city, including more than 20 on our properties.
