The City of Flint and the Genesee County Land Bank are partnering in releasing Beyond Blight 2022, which provides direction for eliminating blight in Flint. Watch the video in this post for an overview or click https://bit.ly/3rVZcjo to view Beyond Blight 2022 in full.
We are grateful for our partners in blight elimination at the City and County!
Genesee County has committed $8 million in ARPA funds towards demolition in Flint and Genesee County. This is in addition to the $16 million in ARPA funds that the City has already committed for demolitions within the City. We are now well on our way of achieving our goal of securing $45.3 million to demolish 2,200 structures by 2026!

We’d like to give a shout out to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Many of the properties Genesee County Land Bank receives after tax foreclosure come with significant hurdles to resale and development. Particularly, many commercial properties in our inventory are blighted and contaminated, requiring prospective purchasers or developers to conduct additional due diligence and plan/budget to address such concerns when considering these properties. In an effort to utilize all available resources to both protect human health and position properties for a reuse, GCLBA works closely with EGLE who has conducted assessment and cleanup work at multiple properties of concern over the years. Identifying and removing underground storage tanks and related contamination can be a lengthy and costly (and often surprising!) process, and we are grateful for the commitment of EGLE to Flint and Genesee County to help address such concerns and some tax-foreclosed properties. Check out these pictures of some of the work EGLE has conducted in the past year!
Partnering to Revitalize Neighborhoods
The Land Bank continued to support and partner in the revitalization efforts in the Durant Tuuri Mott (DTM) target area. We collaborated in several neighborhood improvements completed during fiscal year 2021, including: demolished 17 structures, completed two full-code rehabs that were sold to income qualifying buyers, repaired façades of three properties, painted five utility boxes, replaced sidewalks for six properties in the Carriage Town neighborhood, repainted a community resource center, repaired broken lighting at the Garland St bridge, and co-hosted a neighborhood festival with over 300 attendees. This work would not be possible without our outstanding partner organizations!

Demolishing blighted structures has transformed neighborhoods over the years
Demolition is one of the Land Bank’s most well-known and popular activities. Residents and community members share, time and time again, that demolishing blighted structures makes them feel safer and improves neighborhood conditions. More than 8,200 blighted Land Bank structures have been demolished in Genesee County since 2004, primarily with grant funds. The Land Bank has raised or leveraged more than $100 million to assess, demolish, and rehab blighted structures in Genesee County.
