Check out this little piece of history about Atlas Township's wonderful Shinangaug Lake. The first image is from 1889, 2nd image is 1899, and 3rd image is 2021. Did you know that it was named Neshinangaug (or Neshinaguac) Lake by Native Americans? Even though we have tried to figure out why the name was changed, we haven't found a solid reference to explain the name change. We think it might have been changed just so the settlers had an easier time spelling it and pronouncing it.
Do you have any information about the Lake's name or any references to that info? If so, drop a comment below or send us a message! If you are interested in anymore Atlas Township history, check out the Goodrich/Atlas Historical Society!
