The Census Bureau has released preliminary data. We took the population data from 2010 and compared it to the most recent population data from 2020 to get the results displayed on a simple map by community for Genesee County.

AERIAL IMAGERY
We have six years of orthographic (ortho/vertical) imagery on our site. (2002 thru 2020) People often ask what is the difference between ours and other sources such as Google Maps. The main feature is that our imagery is acquired in Spring leaf-off conditions -- you will tend to be able to see more detail that would be obscured by tree leaves at other times of the year.

Check out this little piece of history about Atlas Township's wonderful Shinangaug Lake. The first image is from 1889, 2nd image is 1899, and 3rd image is 2021. Did you know that it was named Neshinangaug (or Neshinaguac) Lake by Native Americans? Even though we have tried to figure out why the name was changed, we haven't found a solid reference to explain the name change. We think it might have been changed just so the settlers had an easier time spelling it and pronouncing it.

Would you believe there are over 15,000 fire hydrants across Genesee County? The data slowly accumulated over many years, but now is about complete as it can ever be. The fire hydrant locations provide a valuable benefit to residents by aiding County 911, utility maintenance crews and reducing fire insurance rates.

#FlashBackFriday this week is all about Bishop International Airport! Take a look at this cool slideshow showing some historical aerial images. There are 5 images from various years: 1942, 1950, 1966, 1972, & 2018. According to Wikipedia, "In 1928, the Arthur Giles Bishop family gave to the City of Flint 220 acres of land for aeronautical purposes. The city operated Bishop airport until 1987 when the city and Genesee County formed an authority, Bishop International Airport Authority to run the airport."
