Marine pilot to lead NASA mission to International Space Station

As mission commander, Marine Col. Nicole Mann will be responsible for all phases of the flight, from launch to reentry.

"Becoming a Marine is no small feat, so becoming a Marine turned astronaut might simply sound out of this world.

Not, however, for Col. Nicole Mann, 45, a former F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet test pilot who will lead the upcoming SpaceX Crew-5 team to the International Space Station.

“It wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties, flying jets in the Marine Corps, that I realized that being an astronaut was not only something that was a possible dream, but was actually something that was quite attainable,” Mann said during a team press conference Aug. 4."

Yesterday, Aug. 7, marked the 80th anniversary of the beginning of America’s first amphibious invasion of WWII – the Battle of Guadalcanal.

landed on Guadalcanal, Tulagi, and Florida in the southern Solomon Islands, with the objective of capturing a key Japanese chokepoint. Major battles by land, air, and sea, led to Japanese retreat and Allied control over crucial airfields. Victory during Guadalcanal allowed the Allied Forces to seize the strategic initiative in the Pacific theater.

Welcome to the Fleet 🇺🇸

📍Fort Lauderdale, Florida (July 30, 2022)

Today, the U.S. Navy commissioned the USS Fort Lauderdale, the 12th San Antonio class-amphibious transport dock ship and the first to be named for Fort Lauderdale.

The primary mission of the ship will be to embark, transport, and land forces for expeditionary and special operations missions.

Ranks of the Corps

‼️ ALERT ‼️ The chain of command for the Marine Corps ranks is divided into two groups: Enlisted Marines and Marine Officers. The majority of Marines are enlisted. Enlisted Marines begin at the most junior ranks: private, private first class, and lance corporal. Private has a pay grade of E-1, and each rank has a corresponding pay grade from E-1 through E-9. The next giant leap after lance corporal is to non-commissioned officer, or NCO. The NCO ranks are comprised of corporal, then sergeant, followed by the most senior ranks in the Corps: staff NCOs. The staff NCO ranks, in order, are: staff Sergeant or gunnery sergeant-and master sergeant or first sergeant. The single highest-ranking enlisted Marine is the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, who served alongside the Commandant. Each enlisted Marine, no matter how junior or senior, is trusted with responsibility of ensuring the welfare of our country now into the future. 🇺🇸
