On May 23, 1875, Alfred P. Sloan, the longtime chairman and CEO of General Motors, was born in New Haven, Connecticut. A graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Sloan started making his mark running the Hyatt Roller Bearing Company and becoming a valued supplier to the fledgling automotive industry.

In 1916, Billy Durant bought Hyatt and rolled the company into his United Motors Corporation, a consolidation of five suppliers created to primarily supply GM. United was absorbed into GM two years later, and Sloan was made a vice president and director.

Sloan's blueprint of "decentralized operations with coordinated control" successfully reorganized the company and earned him the role of president and CEO of GM in 1923. His financial acumen and marketing motto of "a car for every purse and purpose" made GM the world's largest automaker.

In 1937, he was elected board chairman and continued in that role until being named honorary chairman in 1956, continuing to stay involved the company until his death in 1966.
