Name: Amanda Doyle

What is your job title? Municipal Attorney

Describe the work that you do? I represent various municipalities in Genesee County, that includes prosecuting misdemeanor offenses in 67th district court - which is how I came to fill the prosecutorial role in this program

How long have you been doing this type of work? I've been a practicing attorney for almost 17 years and in the municipal law field for over 10

How did you get involved with working with Sobriety Court? Attorney Amy Harris recommended me to Judge Bayeh Haley who approached me about participating almost 7 years ago; and I'm honored to be involved.

What do you love about your job? I get to learn something new every single day

What do you find most difficult about your job? I struggle with patience... and I need it every day in my role.

What is your favorite time of year/season? Aside from about a week around Christmas time - SUMMER!

What is your favorite food? I love all the food

What is your favorite sports team? Yikes... I'm a Buckeye at heart; Also a big fan of the Red Sox (specifically, the late 90s early 2000s era) and the Cleveland Browns... and the Indians (Guardians?)

What one piece of advice for new Sobriety Court participants? It can all seem incredibly overwhelming - try to take a step back, take a deep breath, and know you will get it all done; and the entire team is here to help.

What is your job title? G.O.A.T. (just kidding!) Certified Peer Recovery Mentor/Recovery Coach

Describe the work that you do? I promote recovery and remove barriers or obstacles to one’s success in the recovery process. It’s my job to educate and inform people of multiple pathways to recovery. Recovery coaches have also been described as cheerleaders; we’re a big part of an individuals’ support network.

How long have you been doing this type work? I’ve been a Recovery Coach with Flint Odyssey House for 6 years now.

How did you get involved with working with Sobriety Court? I wasn’t even aware of Sobriety Court until Ken Jones, the Flint Odyssey House liaison for Sobriety Court, told me about it. He said they were looking for a coach to assist the clients through the Sobriety Court process; would that be something I’m interested in? I jumped at the chance, and the rest is history. Through the years, my role with GCSC has gotten bigger and bigger as well as more enjoyable.

What do you love about your job? As a Coach/Mentor, I use my own learned experience in recovery to assist other people. I’m a firm believer that “I can’t keep what I have unless I give it away” in my own personal recovery, so I try to help people on a regular basis outside of GCSC as well. I basically get paid to do what I do anyway for my own recovery. And there’s always that moment, that moment when you see the look on someone’s face because of something you said that clicked with them; that relating my own journey has helped someone else. It’s priceless.

What do you find most difficult about your job? It’s the exact opposite of that “clicking” moment. It is when I do everything in my power to help someone avoid going down a dark road in their recovery (because hey, I’ve been there, right?) and they just don’t want to hear it. It’s trying to put new ideas on a closed mind, which is Incredibly frustrating. Still, what someone might not hear today, they remember for tomorrow.

What is your favorite time of year/season? I could live in summer all year long.

What is your favorite food? I can only pick one??? I’m a big fan of sushi, but I’d have to say I couldn’t survive without chicken parmesan!

What is your favorite sports team? The greatest sports franchise of all time, the New York Yankees.

What one piece of advice for new Sobriety Court participants? Don’t participate and do all the work with a minimum of effort, concern, or care. If you keep an open mind and truly apply yourself, you might just change your life in ways that you never expected.
