DID YOU KNOW…
Clay County had several places called “Almshouse or Poor farm”.

Xenia Twp was the first place to have a poor farm. It was in the NE corner of Section 13. It had a main house, a poultry house, Tucker house, storm cellar, barn, a well, and a cistern. West of the poor farm was an area used as a burial ground. There are no stones to mark graves. The poor farm was probably used in the 1870’s. There is a county census for 1880 that lists those who were living there. It listed 8 women, 5 men, and 3 children.

The Tucker house was said to house a crazed and violent man named Tucker. It had barred windows and he lived there for many years.

This home may have been in the Xenia area until 1900, when Clay County decided to move it closer to Louisville on the Vandalia Road.

Isaac Montgomery was the supervisor at both homes. The Louisville poor farm had 15 rooms on 80 acres and was there for about40 years. It was closed around 1941-1942.

Just a little Clay County history.

💰I-Cash Program will be held at the Flora Public Library💰

Over $1.6 million in Clay County

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ staff will be at the Flora Public Library on 📆 Thursday, March 26, 2026 to help reunite citizens with missing money property through the I-Cash program.

In Clay County, an estimated 16,600 people and/or businesses have unclaimed cash or property. The value exceeds $1,695,000.00. Statewide, Frerichs secures more than $5 billion in unclaimed cash and property.

“For most people, it is difficult to believe that they might have overlooked an investment account or forgot to pick up a final paycheck. However, the thousands of names in our database shows that it happens too often,” Frerichs said. “This money belongs to the residents of Illinois. It should be in their bank accounts rather than the state’s safe.”

📆⏰The event will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at the Flora Public Library, 216 N. Main St., Flora, IL.

In Illinois, the state treasurer is tasked with safeguarding missing money, such as unpaid life insurance benefits, forgotten bank accounts and unused rebate cards. Illinois holds more than $5 billion in unclaimed property. The state treasurer is legally required to return the property to the rightful owners no matter how long it takes. Individuals can search the state treasurer’s database for their name or the name of their business or non-profit at www.illinoistreasurer.gov/icash.
