This week, we celebrate the unseen heroes who are the first voices you hear in an emergency — our dispatchers and 911 telecommunicators. 💛 They work tirelessly behind the scenes, providing calm in chaos, compassion in crisis, and coordination that saves lives every single day.

To our incredible team (and all telecommunicators everywhere): thank you for your dedication, professionalism, and unwavering service to our community. You are truly the lifeline between those in need and the help that arrives. 🚓🚒🚑

Take a moment this week to thank a telecommunicator — their faces might not be seen, but their impact is felt in every call answered.

Thank you Jennifer Brown, Michael Dickerson, Nancy Dehart, Billy Laughlin, and Jennie Wainscott. You are all appreciated every day!!

Sharing for all of our local fire departments. This is a great reminder. When people forget to call in controlled burns, it triggers a chain reaction of wasted time and fuel, and potentially delays help for someone in a life-threatening situation.

Contact the Flora Police Department at (618) 662-9111 or the Clay County Sheriff's Office at (618) 665-3316 and give us a quick heads up with your location and the expected duration of the burn.

Extreme Cold Weather Advisory & Energy Cost Reminder

Our region is experiencing extremely cold temperatures, and they are predicted to remain dangerously low until at least Monday.

For safety, avoid prolonged exposure to extreme cold and remember to check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance.

We also wanted to let our residents know that during this prolonged cold spell, natural gas bills are likely to be higher than normal. This is due to two factors:

• Higher natural gas market prices during extreme cold (rates are set by the daily gas market and not controlled by the City)

• Increased gas usage as homes and businesses work harder to stay warm.

There are steps residents can take to help reduce energy use where it is safe to do so:

🔹Lower your thermostat by even one degree — small adjustments can make a noticeable difference on your bill

🔹Close blinds and curtains at night to reduce heat loss

🔹Seal drafts around doors and windows

🔹Avoid using space heaters unsafely (plug them directly into the outlet & give them space)

🔹Make sure vents and registers are not blocked

🔹Dress in warm layers indoors when possible

Thank you for doing your part to stay safe and energy-conscious during this extreme weather.
