Suspect in Custody after allegedly firing weapon at Opp Police Officer
(Opp, AL) On Wednesday, August 5, 2026, officers with the Opp Police Department responded to multiple incidents throughout the day involving the same suspect, later identified as Patrick Wilson Hord.
Earlier in the day, officers made contact with Hord on Charles Street after receiving calls regarding an unknown male walking through residential yards. During that encounter, Hord was identified and was observed wearing camouflage shorts and a navy blue long-sleeve shirt.
A short time later around 10:20 a.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Pierce Street in reference to a theft of property. The homeowner reported that an unknown individual had unlawfully entered the residence and stole a Kimber .32 caliber handgun along with scheduled prescription medication. The suspect also entered the bathroom and shaved his head, leaving the hair in the toilet before leaving the residence.
At approximately 3:27 p.m., an Opp Police Investigator received a call regarding a male subject who had entered a residence on Cool Springs Road, just outside the city limits. The homeowners were inside the residence at the time. The suspect left the property driving a camouflage side-by-side utility vehicle. The homeowner advised that the male appeared to have a freshly shaved head, matching evidence discovered earlier at the Pierce Street residence.
A short time later, officers received another report that the side-by-side was traveling on U.S. Highway 84 East near Dyess Dairy Road. Two Opp Police Department officers located the side by side and identified the driver as Patrick Wilson Hord, who was traveling westbound along the shoulder of U.S. Highway 84 East.
Officers attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop; however, Hord accelerated and fled into a nearby field. As officers pursued, they heard what appeared to be a single gunshot being fired. Hord then continued fleeing on the side-by-side into a wooded area, where he escaped.
During the investigation, officers determined that the camouflage Kawasaki Teryx side-by-side Hord was operating had also been stolen from the residence on Pierce Street.
On the morning of Thursday, August 6, 2026, Patrick Wilson Hord was taken into custody by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (SBI SWAT Team) Coffee County Sheriff’s Office and Opp Police Department. The Opp Police Department appreciates the hard work and assistance in locating and apprehending Hord.
The Opp Police Department would also like to thank the numerous law enforcement agencies; ALEA (SBI, Highway Patrol, Swat, Aviation), Alabama Fusion Center , Covington and Coffee County Sheriff's Offjce, Andalusia Police, Covington County Incident Response Team and Enterprise Rescue who all responded and assisted during the search, investigation and apprehension of Hord.
