May 4 was chosen as the date to celebate International Firefighter' Day as it is also the Feast Day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

A Roman officer known for his courage and leadership, St Florian is remembered for his role in organising firefighting brigades and for standing firm in the face of danger.

His legacy lives on in firefighters around the world today.

On this day, we honour not only tradition—but the enduring spirit of service and protection. We celebrate and thank brave firefighters around the world who risk their lives to protect our communities. Your courage, commitment, and dedication never go unnoticed. Stay safe, and know that you are deeply appreciated.

Shortly after 10 PM on Saturday evening, MLVFD was dispatched to a fully involved barn fire within our primary response area.

Thanks to the fast response and coordinated efforts of our mutual aid partners, Underwood-Petersville Volunteer Fire Department, Killen Fire Rescue, and Zip city fire dept, we were able to quickly bring the fire under control. We also appreciate St. Florian Police Department and Lifeguard Ambulance Service - Florence, Alabama for standing by and supporting us.

A special thank you to Frankie’s Auto & Towing, LLC., who responded with a mini-excavator to assist with removing metal siding from the barn. Frankie's support made our overhaul efforts significantly easier, helping to reduce responder fatigue and minimize the risk of heat exhaustion during a long, hot operation.

These moments remind us that community and collaboration are at the heart of the fire service.

While vacationing in Panama City Beach, MLVFD’s own Deputy Chief Kyle Taylor didn’t hesitate to spring into action when he heard cries for help coming from the water.

Kyle, along with fellow firefighters Chief John Hyde of Muscle Shoals Fire Rescue and Lt. Ryan Andrews, leapt into dangerous rip currents to rescue a couple caught in the surf. With quick thinking and incredible bravery, Chief Hyde commandeered a boogie board and made his way to the husband and wife, while Firefighter Taylor and Lt. Andrews helped them reach safety.

Kyle’s courageous response is a powerful reminder that firefighters never really have a day off. Whether in uniform or on vacation, their hearts are always ready to serve.

Help us recognize Kyle for living out that calling with courage and compassion. We’re proud to have him on the MLVFD team!

Today is International Firefighters’ Day — a day set aside to recognize the brave men and women who make tremendous sacrifices to keep our communities safe, and to honor those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

May 4th also marks the feast day of Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters and the namesake of our town. As a department serving a community with such rich spiritual and cultural heritage, this day holds special meaning for all of us at Mid-Lauderdale Volunteer Fire Department.

Join us in thanking firefighters everywhere for their courage, commitment, and selfless service.

We are grateful that Firefighter Grace McCluskey is resting at home and expected to make a full recovery. Her actions yesterday were a reminder of the risks first responders face - never knowing what the day will bring, yet always ready to lend a helping hand.

Please continue to keep her in your prayers as she recovers.

It is with deep respect and gratitude that we acknowledge the bravery of one of our own, Firefighter Grace McCluskey, who was involved in a serious incident yesterday afternoon.

While on her way home, Firefighter McCluskey came upon what appeared to be a motor vehicle accident. Demonstrating the selflessness and commitment to service that defines our profession, she immediately pulled over to render aid, unaware that the individual involved was engaged in a police pursuit with local law enforcement. Without hesitation, she acted in accordance with her training, prioritizing the well-being of those in need. Tragically, in the course of her response, she was shot—an unimaginable consequence for simply doing what she has dedicated her life to: helping others.

We are immensely relieved and grateful to report that Firefighter McCluskey is doing well and is now recovering at home. Her strength and resilience serve as a testament to her character, and we are confident that she will make a full recovery.

We ask for the continued thoughts and prayers of our community, not only for Firefighter McCluskey but also for the Florence police officer who was injured in the same incident. Their dedication to serving and protecting others is a reminder of the risks that first responders face every day.

We would also like to take this opportunity to express our profound appreciation for all firefighters, EMS personnel, and law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line daily to safeguard our community. Their unwavering commitment to public safety does not go unnoticed, and we stand together in support of them.

Thank you for your continued prayers and support during this time. Let us all rally around those who serve, ensuring they receive the respect, gratitude, and assistance they so rightly deserve.

During emergencies, every second counts. Flying drones near accident scenes delays critical care and puts lives at risk. It’s not just dangerous - it’s prohibited by FAA regulations and could lead to fines or even jail time for interfering with first responders. Respect no-fly zones and keep drones grounded so emergency crews can save lives without delay.
