What an incredible way to kick off the 12th year of the Jr. Leadership Florence County 4-H Program!

This weekend, our 2026–2027 Junior Leadership Florence County 4-H Program Class gathered at the SC FFA Camp for their Opening Retreat. Throughout the retreat, participants challenged themselves through team-building activities, leadership development experiences, and opportunities to build lasting friendships. They stepped outside their comfort zones, discovered their individual strengths, and began developing the leadership skills that will guide them throughout the year.

We are excited to welcome another outstanding class of young leaders and can't wait to see all they accomplish over the next ten months. Their journey officially begins, and we look forward to seeing them reconvene for their first monthly session, Leadership Exploration Day, in August.

The Jr. Leadership Florence County 4-H Program is made possible through the partnership of Clemson Extension Florence County – Florence County SC 4-H, Francis Marion University and the Greater Florence Chamber, along with the continued support of our Florence County community.

A special thank you to the SC FFA Camp staff for their outstanding hospitality and to Florence County School District Two for providing transportation for our students.

Here's to an amazing year of leadership, learning, and service! πŸ’šπŸ€ See less

🌊🚣 What an incredible finish to our Florence County 4-H2O Camp: Exploring the P*e Dee Waterways! πŸ’š

Our campers wrapped up three unforgettable days of outdoor adventure, hands-on science, and environmental exploration by diving deeper into the amazing world of our local waterways!

πŸ¦‹ Day 2: Stream Detectives – Exploring the Hidden Life Beneath the Water

Campers became real aquatic scientists as they investigated the health of a local stream through hands-on exploration. They:
πŸ”¬ Learned proper collection procedures and identified macroinvertebrates with guidance from the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services.
πŸ› Discovered how tiny aquatic organisms tell us about water quality.
🧩 Built their own aquatic insects during the Build a Bug activity.
πŸ•ΈοΈ Explored the connections between stream organisms through the Aquatic Food Web Game.
πŸ’§ Put conservation into action during the Water Saver Relay and reflected on ways they can protect our precious water resources.

🚣 Day 3: Kayak Adventure – Explore Our Waterways from a New Perspective

Our final day was the perfect way to celebrate everything campers learned throughout the week! After reviewing water safety, practicing paddle strokes, and learning kayaking fundamentals, campers launched onto the water for a guided kayaking adventure.

Along the way, they observed wildlife, explored the beauty of the P*e Dee region from the water, strengthened their teamwork skills, and gained a greater appreciation for protecting our natural resources. The day also included the Incredible Journey activity, helping campers understand the continuous movement of water through the water cycle.

Throughout the week, our campers developed skills in:
πŸ’§ Water quality monitoring
πŸ”¬ Scientific observation
🚣 Kayaking and water safety
🌿 Environmental stewardship
🀝 Leadership and teamwork

A huge THANK YOU to our outstanding partners and volunteers who made this camp possible, including Francis Marion University Ecology Center, The Farm at Florence 1, RiverRat's Canoe Rentals, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the SC Department of Environmental Services, Florence Darlington Stormwater Consortium and everyone who shared their time, knowledge, and passion for environmental education.

Most importantly, thank you to our amazing campers for your curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to explore, learn, and grow. We hope you'll continue to be champions for clean water and healthy waterways wherever you go!

Until next summer...keep exploring! πŸŒŽπŸ’™

Today was an incredible start to our Florence County 4-H2O Camp: Exploring the P*e Dee Waterways! πŸ’§πŸŒΏπŸŽ£

Our campers kicked off Day 1 with the theme "Every Drop Has a Destination," learning how every action we take impacts our local waterways.

The day was packed with hands-on learning and outdoor adventure as campers:
🎣 Learned Fishing Fundamentals with our partners from Francis Marion University Freshwater Ecology Complex, Dr. Jason Doll
🐟 Created unique fish print art
πŸ’¦ Burned off energy during a fun Water Relay
πŸͺ£ Explored watersheds through the Drop in the Bucket activity
🌎 Learned about water pollution and ways to protect our natural resources
🌊 Used the Enviroscape Watershed Model to see how pollution travels through our communities
πŸ“ Reflected on what they learned in their camp journals before wrapping up the day

It was amazing to watch our campers ask questions, work together, and discover how they can become good stewards of our water resources. We can't wait to continue the adventure tomorrow as we become Stream Detectives! πŸ”¬πŸ¦‹

A special thank you to our partners from Francis Marion University Freshwater Ecology Complex, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Florence Darlington Stormwater Consortium and everyone who helped make our first day a success!
