Duration: Approximately 90 days

The City of Florence Water/Wastewater Department announces that BLD Services, LLC, in coordination with Engineers of the South, will begin Phase 2 of the SRF Funded Concrete and Clay Sanitary Sewer Upgrades on June 8, 2026. This project is expected to take approximately 90 days to complete. During construction, authorized personnel from BLD Services, LLC, Engineers of the South, and/or the City of Florence Water/Wastewater Department will require access to sanitary sewer infrastructure located within rights-of-way along City Streets and in the backyards of homes in the following affected areas.

Gas Service Interruption on Hickory Avenue

City crews are responding to a cut gas main near the area of Hickory Avenue and Elder Street. Gas service has been temporarily shut off while repairs are completed.

Approximately 15 homes are affected at this time. Personnel are onsite, and service is expected to be restored within the next few hours.

Proposed Water and Sewer Rate Increase:

The City of Florence is proposing an increase to water and sewer rates to address rising costs, aging infrastructure, and long term financial stability of the system. Rates have remained mostly unchanged for several years, with only a small increase in 2023. During that same time, the costs of materials, maintenance, and operations have risen significantly, especially after 2020. We are approaching this proactively to address growing costs, strengthen the system, and avoid the more serious outcomes that could occur if action is delayed.

Without action, the system is projected to face a budget deficit in the near future. The proposed rate increase is a proactive stance and will help stabilize the system, support ongoing operations, and allow the City to address infrastructure needs while rebuilding emergency financial reserves. For most residential customers, the average rate can be expected to increase by $20 per month, with larger households or those with higher usage costing proportionately more. Annual escalators, capped at industry-specific CPI levels, will be incorporated to ensure sustainable, long-term funding for ongoing maintenance needs. Rates are based on how much water is used, so small changes at home can reduce costs.

Hydrant Flow Testing Notice: The Florence Fire Department will conduct annual hydrant flow testing throughout the city. During this process, some residents may experience temporary brown or discolored water. This is normal and should clear up shortly. If you notice any ongoing issues, please contact the Water Department at 256-760-6490.

*Hydrant Flow Testing Notice*

Beginning Monday, April 6, our crews will begin annual flow testing of all fire hydrants throughout the city. These tests are essential to ensure hydrants are functioning properly and ready for emergency use. All flow testing will be completed by the end of April.

Hydrant flow testing is also required by the Insurance Services Office (ISO), whose ratings can impact local insurance premiums.

During testing, you may notice temporary water discoloration in areas where hydrants are being tested. This is normal and should clear quickly.
