šš§ Dementia & Driving: A Tough but Important Conversation
One of the hardest decisions after a dementia diagnosis is knowing when itās no longer safe to drive. Itās not just about a carāitās about independence, identity, and freedom.
Think of driving like a traffic light:
š¢ Green: Driving remains safe, but start planning ahead.
š” Yellow: Warning signs appearāgetting lost, dents on the car, slower reactions, or nervous passengers. Time for an evaluation.
š“ Red: Serious safety concernsārunning stop signs, confusing pedals, accidents, or getting lost in familiar places. Itās time to stop driving.
The goal isnāt to wait until someone gets hurt. Itās to protect safety while preserving dignity.
If driving ends, replace whatās being lost: rides from family, community transportation, church support, and meaningful activities can help maintain connection and purpose.
ā¤ļø Safety and dignity are not opposites. The best dementia care protects both.
