🎉 The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is officially making an impact!

On August 15, the P*e Dee Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Assault’s Youth Advisory Council held its first public event at Baker Memorial Library in Timmonsville!

The event, “Connecting the Dots,” explored the connection between violence and the Five Protective Factors, while giving attendees meaningful tools and skills to help build safer, stronger communities. 🧩💙

A HUGE thank you to Amani Rodriguez of Be Safe Families for providing such engaging facilitation and impactful skills for everyone who attended!

Domestic violence doesn't stay at home. Some possible signs children may present at school:

• Sudden anxiety or fearfulness
• Trouble concentrating or falling asleep in class
• Increased aggression or emotional outbursts
• Withdrawal from friends or activities
• Frequent absences or tardiness
• Being unusually watchful or easily startled
• Worrying excessively about a parent or siblings
• Changes in academic performance

Teachers, counselors, coaches, and school staff may be among the first safe adults to notice that something has changed.

Saturday Shoutout!

Youth Advisory Council Member Antonio Singletary spoke to youth on behalf of PDC and the services we provide to victim-survivors. He used his position as an executive member to network with other organizations, make connections, and ask thought-provoking questions. He also used this time to build connections and expand the Advisory Council's reach.

He formed a connection between PDC, the Period Project, and the Donnelly Center to help create a location to supply free hygiene products. Once school is open, he will work toward partnering the Period Project with the Williamsburg County School District to ensure there are free hygiene products for students in the middle and high schools.

Materials that were created by our other executive member, Mallorie James, were also distributed to participants. They focused on mental health tips for youth.

We are having a Women's Self-Defense Class for girls and women headed into or back to college on August 1, 2026 at McLeod Health & Fitness Center and Spa from 9am-5pm. Contact Cameron Faile at 843-777-3093 to sign up. Space is limited, but the class is free!

August to November is called the "Red Zone" for college campuses because it is the time of year where most college sexual assaults take place on campus. Learn techniques and skills, gain confidence, and learn risk awareness to take steps to defend yourself.

Our centers are closed today in observance of the 4th of July. However, our crisis line is still available for anyone in need, and advocates are ready to respond to the hospital for victims in need.

📣Come out and join a movement and discussion event to honor sexual assault awareness. The event will be on Monday, June 1, 2026 from 5-6:30 at the Florence Library.

There will be dancing and movement for healing, roundtables for meaningful discussions, and a community coming together to move forward in supporting sexual assault victims.

‼️ Thank you Lucky Dog Animal Rescue for this partnership. You have just helped create a pathway to help more victims leave their abusive situations.

Threats and Harm: Between 71% and 85% of pet-owning women entering domestic violence shelters report that their intimate partners have threatened, injured, or killed their family pets.

Delayed Departure: Up to 59% of survivors of domestic violence delay leaving an abusive relationship out of fear for their pets' safety, knowing the animals might be harmed or killed in retaliation.

Control Tactics: One study found that 87% of batterer-perpetrated pet abuse incidents occur in the direct presence of the victim for the express purpose of revenge or emotional coercion.

🚩All too often we hear people say, "well it's just an anger management problem", or "they just need anger management".

📣Domestic abuse is NOT an Anger Management problem.
Domestic abuse is a CHOICE!

Perpetrators seek to obtain power and control over their victim-survivor and are very much in control of their anger.

They choose their moments, when to gaslight, when to manipulate and when to use physical or sexual violence. A calculated tactic to erode a victim-survivors sense of self and identity.

If perpetrators were unable to control their anger, they would be abusive to everyone, and not solely to their partners and children, behind closed doors.

Perpetrators manage their emotions well in:
*The community
*Around friends
*The court room
*Intervention Programs
*Probation
*Workplaces
*Contact Centers
And more…

Perpetrators don’t have Anger Management problems, They have accountability problems and are likely continuing to be enabled by those around them.
