Stay safe, Wilson County! Put your headlights on, reduce speed, and give yourself plenty of following room from the vehicles in front of you.

**Safety Tips for Driving in the Rain**

While these tips may seem obvious to some, they are important for everyone. Please share them with your friends and family.

**Turn on Your Headlights**
This advice cannot be emphasized enough. The moment you notice even a hint of rainโ€”or if the weather looks overcastโ€”turn on your headlights. This not only improves your visibility on the road but also significantly increases your visibility to other drivers. You may be surprised how easily an unlit car can be overlooked amidst rainfall and other vehicles with their lights on.

**Slow Down!**
Wet roads reduce traction, which increases your risk of hydroplaning.

**Avoid Sudden Braking and Turning**
Abrupt movements can cause you to lose control of your car.

**Turn Around, Donโ€™t Drown!**
Never attempt to drive through floodwaters. It only takes a few inches of water to sweep your car away. Just 6 inches can cause loss of control, 12 inches can sweep away a small car, and 18-24 inches can carry away a truck.

**Increase Your Following Distance**
This helps you see the road better and enhances your visibility to other drivers. Just one additional second could make the difference between a near miss and a serious accident, so why take the risk?

Stay safe, stay alert, and drive cautiously!
